We report that some menthol‐like cooling compounds, including (R)‐(‐)‐carvone, act as inhibitors of TAS2R31 and TAS2R43, which are taste receptors responsible for the intrinsic bitter aftertastes of saccharin and acesulfame K. However, there was little correlation between the intensity of the cooling sensation and the potency of bitterness inhibition ...

A Temperature-Controlled Device for Volumetric Measurements of Helium Adsorption in Porous Media [PDF]
We describe a set-up for studying adsorption of helium in silica aerogels, where the adsorbed amount is easily and precisely controlled by varying the temperature of a gas reservoir between 80 K and 180 K. We present validation experiments and a first application to aerogels.

A silicon-based surface code quantum computer [PDF]
Individual impurity atoms in silicon can make superb individual qubits, but it remains an immense challenge to build a multi-qubit processor: There is a basic conflict between nanometre separation desired for qubit-qubit interactions, and the much larger

Diffusion‐based size determination of solute particles: a method adapted for postsynaptic proteins
We present a diffusion‐based approach for measuring the size of macromolecules and their complexes, and demonstrate its use on postsynaptic proteins. The method requires fluorescein‐labelled protein samples, a microfluidic device that maintains laminar flow for said samples, a microscope recording the emitted fluorescent signals, and an analytic ...

Quality control of gasohol using a micro-unit for membraneless gas diffusion [PDF]
This work describes the development of a new spectrophotometric flow technique suitable for monitoring of ethanol content in gasohol fuel. Membraneless gas-diffusion (MBL-GD) was applied with one-step aqueous extraction of gasohol (1:2 gasohol/water ...

Influence of Dystrophin Isoform Deficiency on Motor Development in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
ABSTRACT Objective In Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), lack of the shorter dystrophin isoforms Dp140 and Dp71 is associated with increased central nervous system (CNS) involvement. We aimed to investigate how CNS involvement affects motor development in young DMD boys.

An apparatus for in-situ direct shear tests on snow [PDF]
The article presents a prototype of a new device for measuring the shear strength of snow specimens in situ. The resistance to sliding of a snow slab on a mountain slope is a key parameter in snow mechanics.
