Environmental DNA succeeds in detecting a low‐density population of endangered harlequin frogs

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 8, Issue 10, October 2026.
This work evaluates the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) to detect the Critically Endangered Jambato Harlequin Frog (Atelopus ignescens)—an iconic species once thought extinct and now known only from a single locality in the Ecuadorian Andes. Our study demonstrates the effectiveness of eDNA in detecting the Jambato in a low‐density amphibian population,

Introduced dung beetles suppress methane emissions from cattle dung and alter the temporal dynamics of greenhouse gas flux Los escarabajos peloteros introducidos suprimen las emisiones de metano del estiércol de ganado y alteran la dinámica temporal del flujo de gases de efecto invernadero Besouros coprófagos introduzidos suprimem as emissões de metano do esterco bovino e alteram a dinâmica temporal do fluxo de gases de efeito estufa

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 5, Page 1025-1035, October 2026.
Dung beetles suppressed cumulative methane flux from cattle dung by 85% and reduced total greenhouse gas emissions by 18%. Beetle activity accelerated initial CO2 release but did not alter total cumulative flux. N2O and NH3 fluxes were transient and not consistently driven by beetle presence.

Characterizing Habitat Suitability of Long‐Finned Pilot Whales in a Key Conservation Region of the Southern Iberian Peninsula Using Satellite Tracking Data

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 4, October 2026.
ABSTRACT The waters surrounding the southern Iberian Peninsula are a key conservation area for the long‐finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas melas), particularly in the pelagic regions of the Strait of Gibraltar, the Alboran Sea, and the Gulf of Vera, where upwelling, complex bathymetry and frontal dynamics enhance productivity and prey availability,

Linking biosurface reactivity and photosynthesis to investigate Sphagnum mosses as ecosystem engineers

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 252, Issue 1, Page 69-86, October 2026.
Habit photographs of field‐collected and in vitro‐cultivated (c) Sphagnum spp. used for experiments. Summary Sphagnum mosses regulate peatland carbon storage, hydrology, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem functioning. However, the links among their surface chemistry, photosynthesis, responses to submersion and pH remain poorly understood.
