Syngenta's contribution to herbicide resistance research and management. [PDF]

open access: yesPest Manag Sci, 2021
Overview of Syngenta's activities for the advancement of herbicide resistance science and management. The evolution of weed resistance to herbicides is an ever‐increasing problem that affects crop yield and food production. In Syngenta, we believe that this difficult and complex issue can be most efficiently addressed through a deep understanding of ...

Building a feral future: Open questions in crop ferality

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 5, Issue 5, Page 635-649, September 2023., 2023
Given the rapidly increasing drought and temperature stresses associated with climate change, innovative approaches for food security are imperative. One understudied opportunity is using feral crops—plants that have escaped and persisted without cultivation—as a source of genetic diversity, which could build resilience in domesticated conspecifics. In

Assessing social perceptions of rewilding approaches in Spain using traditional domestic livestock

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 87, Issue 6, August 2023., 2023
Livestock rewilding (LR) is the use of herbivorous livestock species to restore ecological functions and trophic complexity in abandoned agricultural landscapes. We assess societal attitudes and awareness of LR in Spain through a questionnaire. Respondents supported LR, but only on the condition of imposing minimum hazards to people and crops.

Multiple compensatory mutations contribute to the de‐domestication of Iberian weedy rice

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 4, Issue 5, Page 499-510, September 2022., 2022
Weedy plants are a major constraint on agricultural productivity. Weedy rice, a weedy type of rice, invades rice fields worldwide and is responsible for reductions in rice yields. Studies to date have detected multiple independent weedy rice origins in different parts of the world.

From the ground up: Patterns and perceptions of herbaceous diversity in organic coffee agroecosystems

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 3, Issue 3, July–September 2022., 2022
Smallholder farms that transition to organic and biodiverse production are increasingly recognized as strongholds of agrobiodiversity. Yet the emergent herbaceous communities in these organic systems remain understudied, with the functional diversity and management of this stratum relatively unknown.

Evaluating institutional fit for the conservation of threatened species

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 5, Page 1437-1450, October 2021., 2021
Abstract Recovery and conservation of threatened species require adequate institutional responses. We tested an approach to systematically identify and measure how an institutional framework acknowledges threats and required responses for the recovery of endangered species.
