Who Controls the off Switch?

2010 First IEEE International Conference on Smart Grid Communications, 2010
We're about to acquire a significant new cyber- vulnerability. The world's energy utilities are starting to install hundreds of millions of 'smart meters' which contain a remote off switch. Its main purpose is to ensure that customers who default on their payments can be switched remotely to a prepay tariff; secondary purposes include supporting ...

Controlling Off-Label Medication Use

Annals of Internal Medicine, 2009
Off-label prescribing may lead to innovative new uses of old medications, is essential in such fields as pediatrics, and avoids the lengthy and expensive process of modifying U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) drug labeling. Using medications for unapproved indications, however, raises concerns about patient safety when the drugs have a high ...

Off-line Controller Design

1998
In Chapter 2, the parameterization of a stabilizing controller K (Q) for a linear plant in terms of a stable (matrix) transfer function Q is discussed. It is shown that if Q spans the class of all stable proper (matrix) transfer functions, the entire class of stabilizing controllers for the plant is spanned.

On-Off Control of Thermal Processes

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation, 1969
Common thermal processes, such as fluid heaters, heat-treatment plant, boilers, dryers, vats, etc., can conveniently be modeled by first-order transit-delayed equations. These processes are widely used in industry where they are usually discontinuously controlled by on-off or on-half-off controllers.

Integrated controls pay-off

25th Joint Propulsion Conference, 1989
It is shown that the integration of the propulsion and flight control systems for high performance aircraft can help reduce pilot workload while simultaneously increasing overall aircraft performance. Results of the Highly Integrated Digital Electronic Control (HiDEC) flight research program are presented to demonstrate the emerging payoffs of controls

TRADE OFFS FOR CLIMATE CONTROL

Measuring Business Excellence, 1998
As a result of the climate change agreements signed in Rio and Kyoto, in 1992 and 1997 respectively, trading in carbon emissions is a reality. Systems of verification and certification such as that devised by SGS Forestry will underpin the regulation and monitoring of the emerging market.
