Tracing holotype trajectories: Mapping the movement of the most valuable herbarium specimens
Global efforts to protect biodiversity depend on fair access to key plant specimens. This study examines the distribution of 119,361 holotypes—unique herbarium specimens used to formally describe new plant species. By linking collection and storage data, we found that holotypes are increasingly held closer to their places of origin, particularly in ...

Hybrid Force Control with on/off Electropneumatic Standard Distributors [PDF]
This paper presents a new control method applied to the electro-pneumatic field. This strategy originates from the hybrid control theory recently developed for the control of asynchronous or synchronous electrical motors, e.g. Retif (2004). The interest of this strategy concerns the possibility of using standard on/off distributors instead of the usual

Iowa Population Exposures to Metals and Metalloids in Well Water
ABSTRACT Previous Iowa studies suggest low levels and chronic arsenic exposures are associated with prostate cancer. The rural Iowa population heavily relies on private wells for drinking water resources and thus is vulnerable to contaminants such as heavy metals found in well water.

Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Decomposition is the transformation of dead organic matter into its inorganic constituents. In most biomes, decomposition rates can be accurately predicted with simple mathematical models, but these models have long under‐predicted decomposition in globally extensive ...

Computer Control of on-off Electrothermal Processes
A control scheme is described for improving the performance characteristics of an on/off electrothermal process by means of a model of the process. A /though the process itself operates on open loop, the switching sequence is closely controlled by the operation of a closed loop incorporating the model and the process controller.
