Solar Convection and Magneto-Convection
1996We explore the general properties of convection in a solar surface layer. Our three-dimensional simulations use a tabulated equation of state that includes excitation and ionization of hydrogen and other abundant atoms, and the formation of H2 molecules. The radiative energy exchange is determined by solving the radiative transfer equation.

Convective Plumes in a Convective Field
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1970Abstract The theory of isolated turbulent plumes given earlier is used to study a field of plumes. Each plume is immersed in the turbulent downdraft which comprises the return flow. The field of flow is specified by three parameters: the heat flux into the atmosphere at the surface, the depth of the convecting layer, and the intensity of turbulence at ...

Preconditioning convection dominated convection‐diffusion problems
International Journal of Numerical Methods for Heat & Fluid Flow, 1995This paper is concerned with the numerical solution of multi‐dimensional convection dominated convection‐diffusion problems. These problems are characterized by a large parameter, K, multiplying the convection terms. The goal of this work is the development and analysis of effective preconditioners for iteratively solving the large system of linear ...

ℋ-matrices for Convection-diffusion Problems with Constant Convection
Computing, 2003Hierarchical matrices provide a technique for the sparse approximation and matrix arithmetic of large, fully populated matrices. This technique has been proven to be applicable to matrices arising in the boundary and finite element method for uniformly elliptic operators with L∞-coefficients. This paper analyses the application of hierarchical matrices

The lithospheric plates of plate tectonics are created from hot mantle rock at ocean ridges and descend into the mantle at ocean trenches. The plates are by definition, part of mantle convection cells. A fluid heated from within or from below and cooled from above convects thermally if the Rayleigh number exceeds a critical value. The earth's mantle is
