Modelling conversational pragmatics in communication aids
Journal of Pragmatics, 2003Non-speaking users of communication aids have a range of pragmatic conversational goals. These may be classified broadly as transactional or interactional and in terms of their immediacy or distance. A phrase-creation approach to the design of assistive devices may be well suited to the achievement of some transactional goals.

Expectations and interpretations of conversations using aided communication
Journal of Interactional Research in Communication Disorders, 2021Background: Reaching mutual understanding can sometimes be challenging in interactions involving communicators using aided communication. This explorative qualitative study offers insights into some of the features of utterance interpretation and meaning negotiation in interactions using graphic communication systems.

An Interactive Conversational Agent to Aid Human Learning
2023In this project, we introduce an intelligent agent that can help humans learn a new subject by intelligently scheduling the introduction of new concepts from that subject to the learner. We explore the application of this agent on the task of language learning wherein we aim to help a learner improve their command on a new language.

Lactic acid fermentation-aided biomass conversion
Renewable Energy, 1996The preservation of fisheries biomass by lactic acid fermentation is discussed. This method is favourably compared to acid ensiling and fish meal production in terms of safety considerations, energy requirements, simplicity of process and product quality.

A Longitudinal Study of AIDS Conversations Between Mothers and Adolescents
AIDS Education and Prevention, 1998The current study examined the stability of mother-adolescent AIDS conversations. Twenty-four mother-adolescent dyads (9 boys, 15 girls) participated at Time 1 (adolescents aged 10-14 years), and again 2 years later. Mothers and adolescents engaged in a videotaped conversation about AIDS and completed AIDS questionnaires.

Proton‐Coupled Electron Transfer Aided Thermoelectric Energy Conversion and Storage
Angewandte Chemie International Edition, 2023AbstractLow‐grade heat is ubiquitous in the environment and its thermoelectric conversion by the ionic conductors remains a challenge because of the low efficiency and poor sustainability. Here we demonstrate that the thermoelectric performances can be boosted by combining the Soret effect of protons and proton‐coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction

A process for computer-aided cartographic data conversion
Computers & Industrial Engineering, 1984Abstract A procedure has been developed to convert large quantities or data recorded in planer coordinates to UTM coordinates without introduction of distortion. The described method was developed to replace an earlier procedure that did produce some distortion in the boundary area of segments of the data base.

Prosodic aids to structural analysis of conversational speech
ICASSP '86. IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2005An algorithm for inferring the sentence structure of conversational speech using prosodic information is presented. The fundamental frequency (F0) contour shape, which is the major prosodic information parameter that best represents the structure of a spoken sentence, is analyzed in detail by means of F0 shape approximation with a sequence of linear ...

Evaluation of the content of computer-aided conversations
Augmentative and Alternative Communication, 1995The study reports an experimental evaluation of the content of computer-aided and unaided conversations on the same fairly broad topic (i.e., holidays). The computer-aided conversations involved volunteers and one of the researchers, who simulated a nonspeaking person using an alternative communication system, “TALK” (talk aid using preloaded knowledge)

Remote Work Aided by Conversational Agents
2020Due to the coronavirus pandemic, remote work from home has rapidly become a necessity around the world, drastically changing the potential landscape for the future of work. Over the last couple of decades, microtask crowdsourcing has emerged as a viable means of carrying out remote online work to earn one’s living — an alternative to traditional work ...
