Most sequence-to-sequence neural conversation models have a ubiquitous problem that they tend to generate boring and safe responses with almost none useful information, such as “I don’t know” or “I’m OK”. In this paper, we study the response generation problem and propose a topic-net conversation model (TNCM) via incorporating topic information into ...

A synchronization model for protocol conversion
IEEE INFOCOM '89, Proceedings of the Eighth Annual Joint Conference of the IEEE Computer and Communications Societies, 1989A formal model is presented to analyze two aspects of conversion problems: translation and synchronization. The purpose of the translation is to map messages in one protocol to those in another protocol, whereas the synchronization is to hold matched messages for carrying out the translation. An algorithm is given to construct a valid converter.

Modeling disfluencies in conversational speech
4th International Conference on Spoken Language Processing (ICSLP 1996), 1996Conversational speech is notably different from read speech in several ways, particularly in the presence of disfluencies but also in the frequent use of a small set of words that mark the flow of the discourse. Disfluencies are sometimes viewed as a "problem" in language modeling, where most previous work has focused on written text. In this paper, we

On Abstract Models and Conversation Policies
2000It is possible to define conversation policies, such as communication or dialogue protocols, that are based strictly on what messages and, respectively, what performatives may follow each other. While such an approach has many practical applications, such protocols support only “local coherence” in a conversation. In a mixed-initiative dialogue between

In 1984 a Quaker trust funded a doctoral research program on arms conversion and the UK Defense industry at the University of Bradford’s Department of Peace Studies [1]. No such study of the UK Defense industry had been undertaken from a conversion perspective since that by the Economist Intelligence Unit in the early 1960s [2]. Yet, before Gorbachev’s

Abstract The Conversational Model is the name Robert Hobson (1920–1999) gave, in 1985, to an approach to psychotherapy that grew out of work with patients who had failed other treatments; many of these would now be called ‘borderline’. Its main focus is on the sense of a life going on within us, its feelings, images, and various forms ...

A costing model for software conversions
Software: Practice and Experience, 1982AbstractIn this paper a cost model for software conversion projects is developed. The model is based upon three variable parameters: L (thousands of lines of source code), N (the total number of programs being converted) and E (the conversion software inefficiency).

EPC Workflow Model to WIFA Model Conversion
2006 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, 2006The dynamics and volunteer-based workforce characteristics of incident command systems raise a challenge to workflow management. Incident command systems must be able to adapt to the ever changing surroundings and tasks during an incident. Furthermore, during an incident, the majority of workers are volunteers that vary in their knowledge of the ...

Dialogue Modelling for a Conversational Agent
2001There is growing agreement that dialogue management is critical to speech enabled applications. This paper describes a novel approach to knowledge acquisition in the natural language processing domain, and shows the use of techniques from cognitive task analysis to capture politeness protocols from a "dialogue expert." Acknowledging the importance of ...
