Thermostable neutral metalloprotease from Geobacillus sp. EA1 does not share thermolysin's preference for substrates with leucine at the P1′ position

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Knowing how proteases recognise preferred substrates facilitates matching proteases to applications. The S1′ pocket of protease EA1 directs cleavage to the N‐terminal side of hydrophobic residues, particularly leucine. The S1′ pocket of thermolysin differs from EA's at only one position (leucine in place of phenylalanine), which decreases cleavage ...

CONVERSION OF LAPAROSCOPIC CHOLECYSTECTOMY TO OPEN CHOLECYSTECTOMY: PREOPERATIVE RISK FACTORS AND INTRAOPERATIVE REASONS

open access: yesPakistan Armed Forces Medical Journal, 2020
Objective: To identify the frequency, associated risk factors and intraoperative reasons for conversion of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy to open Cholecystectomy. Study Design: Case series study.

Impact of Television Advertising for Freemium Services on Consumer Purchases:

open access: yesMaketingu rebyu
In freemium platforms where the basic usage fee is free, operators have the advantage of acquiring users without incurring advertising costs. However, Japanese operators often place TV advertisements, which are generally considered to be expensive ...

Asymptotic entanglement transformation between W and GHZ states

open access: yes, 2014
We investigate entanglement transformations with stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC) in an asymptotic setting using the concepts of degeneration and border rank of tensors from algebraic complexity theory.

The influence of transport phenomena on the fluidized bed combustion of a single carbon particle [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
The burning rate and temperature of the carbon particles are known to affect the efficiency of a fluidized bed combustor, and also the emission levels of undesired noxious components. The main results of an extensive study on the fluidized bed combustion

Exploring lipid diversity and minimalism to define membrane requirements for synthetic cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Designing the lipid membrane of synthetic cells is a complex task, in which its various roles (among them solute transport, membrane protein support, and self‐replication) should all be integrated. In this review, we report the latest top‐down and bottom‐up advances and discuss compatibility and complexity issues of current engineering approaches ...

Evaluation of Early Urgent Versus Delayed Urgent Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in the Treatment of Acute Cholecystitis

open access: yesJournal of Rawalpindi Medical College, 2013
Background: To compare the timing of laparoscopic cholecystectomy and injury to common bile duct (CBD) and frequency of failure (conversion rate from laparoscopic to open cholecystectomy) of early urgent versus delayed urgent laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Swiss Monitoring of Potential Organ Donors (SwissPOD): a prospective 12-month cohort study of all adult ICU deaths in Switzerland

open access: yesSwiss Medical Weekly, 2014
BACKGROUND: The Swiss Monitoring of Potential Organ Donors (SwissPOD) was initiated to investigate the causes of the overall low organ donation rate in Switzerland. The objective of our study was an assessment of the donation after brain death (DBD)

Large mass dilepton production from jet-dilepton conversion in the quark-gluon plasma

open access: yes, 2011
We calculate the production of large mass dileptons from the passage of jets passing through the quark-gluon plasma. Using the relativistic kinetic theory, we rigorously derive the production rate for the jet-dilepton conversion in the hot medium.

C‐mannosylation promotes ADAMTS1 activation and secretion in human testicular germ cell tumor NEC8 cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
C‐mannosylation is a unique form of protein glycosylation. In this study, we demonstrated that ADAMTS1 is C‐mannosylated at Trp562 and Trp565 in human testicular germ cell tumor NEC8 cells. We found that C‐mannosylation of ADAMTS1 is essential for its secretion, processing, enzymatic activity, and ability to promote vasculogenic mimicry. These findings
