Botanic and heritage gardens as living laboratories in the age of the polycrisis

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Societal Impact Statement Cities face intertwined crises of climate, biodiversity loss and social disconnection. We show how botanic and heritage gardens can help address these challenges as living laboratories to generate place‐based evidence and public engagement.

Impact of Solar Reflectance Attenuation and Roof Cleaning on a Cool Roof: Assessing Return on Investment for Facility Management

open access: yes, 2017
Research has shown roofing systems with high solar reflectance and thermal emissivity lead to less heat absorption, a consequential reduction in cooling load demand, and a resultant reduction on energy expenditure.

Preparatory meteorological modeling and theoretical analysis for a neighborhood-scale cool roof demonstration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Replacing dark conventional roofs with more reflective “cool” roofs has been proposed as a method to lower urban air temperatures. Many meteorological studies have simulated potential cool roof air temperature reductions. However, economic and logistical

Leaf heat tolerance in a native Californian shrub responds in expected and unexpected ways to differences in range, season, and sunlight exposure

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Earth's ecosystems are experiencing wide‐ranging impacts from global climate change, including increased average and extreme temperatures. These temperature shifts can drastically affect plant physiology, threatening the future of even common plant species. Here, we focus on photosynthetic function in a native Southern California shrub species.

Evaluating the Operational Potential of LRV Signatures Derived from UAV Imagery in Performance Evaluation of Cool Roofs

open access: yesEnergies, 2019
It is quite difficult to find studies regarding area-wide data from UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) remote sensing in evaluating the energy saving performance of a cool roof.

Systematic Comparison of the Influence of Cool Wall versus Cool Roof Adoption on Urban Climate in the Los Angeles Basin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
This study for the first time assesses the influence of employing solar reflective “cool” walls on the urban energy budget and summertime climate of the Los Angeles basin.

Managing pests by increasing predators through late termination of cover crops

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Adding cover crops to crop rotations can improve the sustainability and ecosystem functioning of agroecosystems. By delaying cover‐crop termination, growers can effectively increase natural enemy populations and reduce the need for chemical controls. Abstract BACKGROUND Adding cover crops to crop rotations can improve the sustainability and ecosystem ...

Comparative Thermal Analysis of Different Cool Roof Materials for Minimizing Building Energy Consumption [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The roof and walls in the urban areas contribute to major share in the absorption of solar radiations and also retard the outflow of the absorbed radiation from the building envelope, thereby increasing the global warming by inducing the heat island ...

Observations and numerical simulations of a valley‐exit wind in the Alpine Bolzano basin

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The evolution and spreading of the nocturnal valley‐exit wind flowing from the Isarco Valley into the Bolzano basin, in the Italian Alps, are found to be influenced by the basin temperature stratification. Measurements and high‐resolution simulations show that a cold‐air pool favors an upward trajectory of the flow at the exit of the valley.

Novel cool roofing technology system with sustainable design for attic temperature reduction

open access: yesAin Shams Engineering Journal
The penetration of increasing solar gain towards the building deteriorates the building's thermal quality and raises cooling demand. In particular, the roof receives the most solar gain.
