Multi-objective optimization of cooling galleries inside pistons of a diesel engine

Applied Thermal Engineering, 2018
Abstract In order to solve a trade-off problem between temperature and thermal stress of pistons for cross section design of a cooling gallery, a multi-objective optimization and a co-simulation workflow are carried out to calculate an optimal design and thermal solutions inside the piston’s thermal system of a diesel engine.

3-D Modeling of Heat Transfer in Diesel Engine Piston Cooling Galleries

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2005
<div class="htmlview paragraph">Ever increasing specific power of diesel engines has put huge demand on effective thermal management of the pistons for the desired reliability and durability. The piston temperature control is commonly achieved by injecting cooling oil into piston galleries, but the design of the cooling system as well as the ...

Numerical study of the influence of wetting properties on flow characteristics and heat transfer in piston cooling gallery

Proceedings of the Institution of mechanical engineers. Part D, journal of automobile engineering
Being a crucial thermal management component in an internal combustion engine, the wettability of the piston gallery significantly influences heat transfer performance. This study deeply investigates the impact of the piston gallery’s wettability on heat

CFD Modeling of the Multiphase Flow and Heat Transfer for Piston Gallery Cooling System

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2007
<div class="htmlview paragraph">Numerical models are used in this study to investigate the oil flow and heat transfer in the piston gallery of a diesel engine. An experiment is set up to validate the numerical models. In the experiment a fixed, but adjustable steel plate is instrumented and pre-heated to a certain temperature. The oil is injected

Thermo-Optical Tuning of Whispering Gallery Modes in Microspheres around the 85Rb Cooling Transition

Frontiers in Optics 2009/Laser Science XXV/Fall 2009 OSA Optics & Photonics Technical Digest, 2009
We present a method for tuning whispering gallery modes in microspheres and demonstrate tuning to the cooling transition of85Rb. The tuning method can be used in UHV and is of interest for cavity-QED experiments.

Development of an Oil Gallery Cooling Model for Internal Combustion Engines Considering the Cocktail Shaker Effect

Numerical Heat Transfer, Part A: Applications, 2009
An internal combustion engine oil gallery cooling model was developed, which can predict average heat transfer coefficients by considering the cocktail shaker effect due to the reciprocal motion of the engine piston. The model prediction showed good agreement with available experimental data.

Cooling the mechanical motion of a tapered optical fiber and a microsphere-cantilever using whispering gallery modes

SPIE Proceedings, 2016
Light coupled from a tapered optical fiber is used to excite the morphology dependent whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonances of a silica microsphere-cantilever. Using the optomechanical transduction from the WGM supported by the microsphere1, we can simultaneously detect the thermal Brownian motion of both the microsphere-cantilever and the tapered ...
