The ecology of cooperative breeding behaviour

open access: yesEcology Letters, 2017
AbstractEcology is a fundamental driving force for the evolutionary transition from solitary living to breeding cooperatively in groups. However, the fact that both benign and harsh, as well as stable and fluctuating, environments can favour the evolution of cooperative breeding behaviour constitutes a paradox of environmental quality and sociality ...

Predicting Loss of Ambulation in Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy R9

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Limb girdle muscular dystrophy type R9 (LGMDR9) results from biallelic variants in FKRP. There is limited data to predict loss of ambulation (LOA) among those with LGMDR9. Methods Participants in an ongoing dystroglycanopathy natural history study (NCT00313677) with FKRP variants who had achieved ambulation and were more than 3 ...

Cooperative behaviour and cooperative breeding: What constitutes an explanation? [PDF]

open access: yesBehavioural Processes, 2007
We all have experienced the proliferation of electronic access o manuscripts and various Internet-based search tools for scienific literature. Nevertheless, it remains a tall order for a scientist o find all relevant information that will advance his or her thinkng on a subject.

Value of MRI Outcomes for Preventive and Early‐Stage Trials in Spinocerebellar Ataxias 1 and 3

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To examine the value of MRI outcomes as endpoints for preventive and early‐stage trials of two polyglutamine spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs). Methods A cohort of 100 participants (23 SCA1, 63 SCA3, median Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) score = 5, 42% preataxic, and 14 gene‐negative controls) was scanned at 3T up ...

Climate-mediated cooperation promotes niche expansion in burying beetles

open access: yeseLife, 2014
The ability to form cooperative societies may explain why humans and social insects have come to dominate the earth. Here we examine the ecological consequences of cooperation by quantifying the fitness of cooperative (large groups) and non-cooperative ...

From sharing food to sharing information: Cooperative breeding and language evolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Language is a cognitively demanding human trait, but it is also a fundamentally cooperative enterprise that rests on the motivation to share information. Great apes possess many of the cognitive prerequisites for language, but largely lack the motivation

An Experimental Test of Central Place Foraging Theory in a Cooperatively Breeding Bird

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Central place foraging, whereby individuals are constrained in their foraging by their need to return to a central place, is common in nesting birds. A key prediction of the central place foraging theory models developed by Orians and Pearson is that as ...

Interaction between Molten Al‐Killed Mn–B Steel and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐temperature interactions between low‐sulfur Al‐killed Mn–B steel and MgO–C refractories (0 and 50 wt% recyclates) are studied via finger immersion tests (1600 °C). Surface‐active elements influence infiltration. MgO/CaS layer forms, along with spinel and calcium silicate.
