Tree cover and geographic origin of tree species drive bird functional groups in urban environments

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Urban trees provide habitat and resources for wild species in cities and support biodiversity provision of ecosystem services, among which insect control is particularly relevant. Predators of insects are promoted by the presence of trees and, in turn, may enhance biosecurity of the trees.

Urbanisation and human activities influence the co‐occurrence of red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris and meso‐carnivores in Berlin, Germany

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Urban expansion is a major driver of habitat fragmentation, shrinking wildlife habitat, and restricting wildlife movements and activity patterns. In this novel environment, species must adapt to the new composition of wildlife communities. For example, red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris are commonly found in urban environments, while their potential ...

Artificial supplementary food influences hedgehog occupancy and activity patterns more than predator presence or natural food availability

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Supplementary feeding for declining hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus populations is popular in Great Britain and has been suggested as an important factor in explaining higher densities in urban areas compared with rural ones. Occupancy modelling was used to test whether spatial variation in supplementary feeding, natural food, habitat, or predator ...

Nocturnal neighbors: exploring residents' perceptions of urban wildlife related to animal traits identified by camera traps and literature

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Wildlife in urban areas is often a source of conflict, yet relatively few efforts have been directed toward fostering coexistence in these human‐dominated landscapes. While previous research has focused on socio‐demographic factors influencing perceptions of wildlife, the role of specific animal traits in shaping acceptance remains underexplored.
