Assessing urban security and safety smartness: A systematic review of key performance indicators

open access: yesIET Smart Cities, Volume 7, Issue 1, January/December 2025.
Abstract The smart city framework has become a key approach to addressing urbanisation challenges over the last 2 decades. While KPIs have been developed for various smart city dimensions, security and safety remain underexplored. This paper addresses this gap through a systematic review of KPIs.

Deep‐Focus Earthquake Mechanisms at the Subducting Nazca Plate (Peru‐Brazil Border): Cold Slab Behavior in a Warm Plate

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 11, Issue 10, October 2024.
Abstract We calculate focal mechanisms and centroid depths for deep‐focus earthquakes (DFEs) along the Peru‐Brazil border. We obtained a total of 28 focal solutions for events with magnitudes between 4.2 and 7.5 Mw and occurring between 2014 and 2022.

Soil carbon and nitrogen cycling at the atmosphere–soil interface: Quantifying the responses of biocrust–soil interactions to global change

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 10, October 2024.
Despite the critical role of biological soil crusts (biocrusts) in dryland C and N cycles, little is known about how biocrust‐derived C and N move into the soil. This study reveals how biocrusts facilitate the downward movement of C and N and drive the formation of mineral‐associated organic matter in subcrust soils.

Why Is the Dust Activity in the Atacama Desert Low Despite its Aridity?

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 129, Issue 16, 28 August 2024.
Abstract The Atacama Desert is amongst the driest places on Earth yet large dust outbreaks seem rare. We present the first quantitative assessment of dust events in the Atacama for 1950–2021 based on station observations. A total of 1920 dust days were recorded with less than 10% being classified as dust storms. We calculated the wind speeds at 5%, 25%

The subduction of the Copiapó aseismic ridge, is the causing of the formation of metallic minerals deposits in north of Chile and Argentina?

open access: yesGeodesy and Geodynamics, 2019
The results obtained in this work evince that the metallic mineral deposits located in the northern region of the Chilean-Pampean flat slab (in northern Chile and north-western Argentina), at approximately 27° 30′S, would be related to the subduction of ...
