Coping refers to the “things people do to avoid being harmed by life’s strains” (Pearlin & Schooler, 1978, p. 2). They try to overcome difficulties and minimize the impact of unpleasant events by using skills and habits that have been developed over a lifetime. Coping implies a goal or purpose, whether or not this is consciously recognized.
