Blood-borne parasites in the Black Vulture Coragyps atratus in northwestern Costa Rica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Blood parasites of 17 Black Vultures (Coragyps atratus) were surveyed. The birds were captured from two sites- a garbage dump in Miramar, Puntarenas and a beach in Cuajiniquil, Guanacaste, of Costa Rica. Two blood smears were made per bird, stained, and examined for Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, Trypanosoma, Plasmodium and microfilaria presence.

Survival of a Long-Lived Avian Scavenger: Implications of Age, Season, and Landscape Composition for Mortality Risk. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
The goal of this study was to evaluate survival and mortality risk in black vultures (Coragyps atratus), a protected native species of conflict management concern in the United States. High survival rates from this study help explain this species' population growth and range expansion and further inform allowable take for sustainable management ...

Beach Buffet: First Observations of White-Backed Vultures <i>Gyps africanus</i> Feeding on a Cape Fur Seal <i>Arctocephalus pusillus</i> on the Skeleton Coast. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Vultures are specialized scavengers that provide critical ecosystem services by clearing carcasses, though their activity in African coastal environments has previously been limited to only two documented species (i.e., the Lappet‐faced and the Hooded Vultures).

Camera Trap Design Determines Taxa Detected at Carrion Sites. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
In this study, we demonstrated that camera trap orientation (i.e., horizontal and vertical) at carrion sites differed in their animal community composition and taxa associations. The vertical camera trap orientation was more likely to detect necrophagous invertebrates, while the horizontal orientation was more likely to detect white‐tailed deer.

Mitochondrial Genome Analysis of Philippine Eagles (<i>Pithecophaga jefferyi</i> Ogilvie-Grant 1896) From the Greater Mindanao Faunal Region. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Mitogenome sequencing is a promising alternative for the genetic studies of animals. In this work, we examined the genetic diversity of the critically endangered and endemic Philippine eagles and their evolutionary relationship to other birds of prey.
