The Future of Coral Reefs [PDF]

open access: possibleScience, 2011
In their Review “Projecting coral reef futures under global warming and ocean acidification” (22 July, p. [418][1]), J. M. Pandolfi et al. argue that the threat of climate change for corals has been exaggerated by pointing to variability in coral heat tolerance, adaptation potential, and ...

Coral reef ecosystem functioning: eight core processes and the role of biodiversity

Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, 2019
Coral reefs are in global decline. Reversing this trend is a primary management objective but doing so depends on understanding what keeps reefs in desirable states (ie “functional”).

Microplastics in the Coral Reef Systems from Xisha Islands of South China Sea.

Environmental Science and Technology, 2019
The impacts of microplastics on coral reefs are gaining attention due to findings that microplastics affect coral health. This work investigated the distribution and characteristics of microplastics in the seawater, fish, and corals in 3 atolls from the ...

Demographic dynamics of the smallest marine vertebrates fuel coral reef ecosystem functioning

Science, 2019
Little fish make a big contribution Coral reefs represent one of the most biodiverse and rich ecosystems. Such richness conjures up images of coral heads and large colorful reef fishes. Brandl et al.

Nitrification on a coral reef

Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1975
We report that the algal pavement just behind the reef crest at Enewetak Atoll produces nitrate at measurable rates. In situ and in vitro incubations with N-Serve® indicate that the autotrophic pathway involving two separate organisms is effective in this oxidation of ammonia to nitrate.
