Integrating ecological feedbacks across scales and levels of organization

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
In ecosystems, species interact in various ways with other species, and with their local environment. In addition, ecosystems are coupled in space by diverse types of flows. From these links connecting different ecological entities can emerge circular pathways of indirect effects: feedback loops.

Fish as indicators of coral reef ecosystem status

open access: yesEcological Indicators
Monitoring coral reef health is essential for managing biodiversity and ecosystem services in the face of accelerating environmental change. Here, we assess whether aggregated reef fish indicators at the assemblage and family level can reflect variation ...

Behavioral Evidence of Predator–Predator Commensalism: Cobia Track and Feed on Prey Disturbed by Southern Stingrays

open access: yesEthology, EarlyView.
We documented a novel predator–predator commensal foraging interaction between cobia (Rachycentron canadum) and a southern stingray (Hypanus americanus) in a shallow coastal habitat of Biscayne Bay, Florida. Using drone‐based observations, we recorded a 7‐min sequence in which a cobia closely tracked the stingray's movements and fed on prey disturbed ...

Extending the Bajo de Sico, Puerto Rico, Seasonal Closure: An Examination of Small-scale Fishermen’s Perceptions of Possible Socio-economic Impacts on Fishing Practices, Families, and Community [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Despite considerable conservation efforts, many reef fish fisheries around the world continue to be in peril. Many are vulnerable to overexploitation because they have predictable and highly aggregated spawning events. In U.S.

Associations of Commercial Fisheries and Cold‐Water Corals and Sponges

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, EarlyView.
Three metrics for determining whether the marine life that are landed by commercial fisheries are associated with cold‐water corals and sponges: (a) Adjacent; (b) General Proximity; and (c) Habitat. The relationship between these structure forming invertebrates (SFI) and fisheries is robust across analytical approaches.
