The Ecological Mechanism of Coral–Algal Phase Shifts: A Case Study of Wenchang in Hainan Province

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 2, February 2026.
This study selected the coral reef areas in the coastal waters of Wenchang, Hainan, China, which were significantly affected by human activities. Through four consecutive years of field investigations, the key driving factors and potential mechanisms of ecological phase shifts between corals and macroalgae were identified, thus providing a scientific ...

Functionally Rich Fish Assemblages Support Greater Rates of Multiple Ecological Functions in Seagrass Meadows

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 2, February 2026.
We show that the functional diversity of fishes promotes multifunctionality in seagrass meadows. We found that there was consistency in the seascape context and connectivity variables that structured the rate and distribution of different components of functioning and the functional diversity of fish in seagrass meadows.

Composite Superhydrophobic Surfaces with Optical/Electrical Properties can Achieve Efficient Ice Prevention

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, Volume 311, Issue 2, February 2026.
This paper reports the preparation of a superhydrophobic composite coating using a spray‐coating method. The coating features PDMS and PVDF as organic bonding frameworks, doped with GPE, MWCNTs, and modified SiO2 functional nanoparticles to achieve efficient de‐icing.

The influence of multiple stressors on the spatial distribution of corals

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 2, Page 342-358, February 2026.
Abstract Coral reef ecosystems are widely threatened by global change, yet the cumulative impacts of multiple interacting stressors remain difficult to quantify over space and time. We evaluate how long‐term artisanal fishing effort, blast fishing, human population density and marine protected areas (MPAs) interact with biophysical and seascape ...

Anthropogenically Stimulated Carbonate Dissolution in the Global Shelf Seafloor Is Potentially an Important and Fast Climate Feedback

open access: yesAGU Advances, Volume 7, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract Carbonate mineral production and dissolution regulate atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations via modulation of the ocean alkalinity content. The anthropogenic rise in atmospheric CO2 reduces calcification rates and enhances calcium carbonate dissolution, which increases ocean alkalinity, counteracts acidification, and stimulates ocean

Silicate and Carbonate Weathering Perturbation at the Eocene‐Oligocene Transition Recorded by Mg Isotopes

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 27, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract During the Eocene‐Oligocene Transition (ca. 34 Ma), the Earth underwent a dramatic decline in atmospheric CO2, global cooling, a deepening of the carbonate compensation depth (CCD), and the formation of a permanent ice sheet on Antarctica. The expansion of Antarctic glaciers eroded the underlying bedrock and increased the weathering flux to ...

Thresholds of Wave Forcing: Implications for Atoll Reef Dynamics Under Sea Level Rise

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract We investigate the response of shallow reef flow to tidal variability and wave exposure during a 4‐month field campaign in southern Huvadhu Atoll, Maldives. Incident waves breaking on steep fore reefs and reef crests generate a setup proportional to offshore wave height that drives a cross‐reef flow. We emphasize a critical threshold—where the
