Gain-of-function mutations in IFIH1 cause a spectrum of human disease phenotypes associated with upregulated type I interferon signaling

open access: yesNature Genetics, 2014
The type I interferon system is integral to human antiviral immunity. However, inappropriate stimulation or defective negative regulation of this system can lead to inflammatory disease.

Balancing tracks and trees: Assessing railroad impact on Brazilian biodiversity

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The Brazilian West–East Integration Railway (FIOL) aims to boost the national economy by improving commodity transport; however, it crosses three of Brazil's most biodiverse and fragile regions: the Caatinga, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest. Using digitised plant records and land‐use analyses, our study reveals significant vegetation loss within the ...

Valorization of Garcinia humilis Residues in Active Collagen/Starch Films for Biodegradable Packaging Applications

open access: yesPackaging Technology and Science, EarlyView.
Residues from Garcinia humilis were used to obtain a phenolic‐rich extract (GHRE) and incorporated into collagen–starch films. The addition of GHRE improved antioxidant activity, thermal stability and elasticity, while reducing water vapour permeability.

Generalized Transmuted Family of Distributions: Properties and Applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We introduce and study general mathematical properties of a new generator of continuous distributions with two extra parameters called the Generalized Transmuted Family of Distributions. We investigate the shapes and present some special models.

The distribution of Pearson residuals in generalized linear models

open access: yes, 2008
In general, the distribution of residuals cannot be obtained explicitly. We give an asymptotic formula for the density of Pearson residuals in continuous generalized linear models corrected to order $n^{-1}$, where $n$ is the sample size.

Biological properties of extracellular vesicles and their physiological functions

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Vesicles, 2015
In the past decade, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been recognized as potent vehicles of intercellular communication, both in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. This is due to their capacity to transfer proteins, lipids and nucleic acids, thereby influencing

Pollination‐related plant traits under environmental changes: Seasonal and daily mismatches produce temporal constraints

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Pollination is a key tenet of ecosystem sustainability and food security, but it is threatened by climate change. While many studies investigated the response of plant‐pollination traits to temperature, few attempted multifactorial and integrative approaches with ...
