Cordulegaster heros is included in the EN category on the IUCN Red List for the territory of the Czech Republic, where it inhabits an area of approximately 100 km2. All of the localities are located in the forest complex in Chřiby hills, and all of the forests fall into the category of management forests.

There are two species of Cordulegastridae in Hungary. The habitats of the commoner species {Cordulagaster bidentatus) can be found in the Soproni, Kőszegi, Bakony, Zempléni and Mátra Mountains. But the occurrences of Cordulegaster heros were known from the Soproni Mountains, Őrségi Hills, and the Mecsek Mountains.

The earliest record of this species is dated back to 2005. Intensive investigations, habitat mapping and ecological research of C. heros were started in 2008. Our researches were focused on the larval instars and also on the conservation of the habitats. Most of the discussed C. heros populations were strong with high abundance.
