STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES OF CORE–PERIPHERY COMMUNITIES

Advances in Complex Systems, 2023
Empirical studies have consistently demonstrated the presence of a core–periphery structure within social network communities. Nevertheless, a formal model and comprehensive analysis to fully understand the structural characteristics of these communities are still lacking.

Current Account 'Core-Periphery Dualism' in the EMU [PDF]

open access: possibleSSRN Electronic Journal, 2014
AbstractCurrent account (CA) dispersion within European Union (EU) Member States has been increasing progressively since the 1990s. Interestingly, the persistent deficits in many peripheral countries have not been accompanied by a significant growth process able to stimulate a log run rebalancing as neoclassical theory predicts.

Core-Periphery Trading Networks

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2016
This paper provides a theory of endogenous network formation in over-the-counter markets based on trade competition and inventory risk balancing. A core-periphery network structure arises as an equilibrium outcome. A small number of agents emerge as core dealers to intermediate among a large number of peripheral agents.

Core-periphery differences in infant mortality

Social Science & Medicine, 1987
The study aims to describe the development of core-periphery differences in infant mortality trends in Finland from 1950 to 1984. The infant mortality trends in core and in periphery are described at three levels of spatial hierarchy: (1) nation, (2) province and (3) local hospital region.

Models of core/periphery structures

Social Networks, 2000
A common but informal notion in social network analysis and other fields is the concept of a core/periphery structure. The intuitive conception entails a dense, cohesive core and a sparse, unconnected periphery. This paper seeks to formalize the intuitive notion of a core/periphery structure and suggests algorithms for detecting this structure, along ...

Cores, Peripheries, and Civilizations

2019
The terminology of "core" and "periphery" allows to address substantive issues of interest to the study of world politics, of world systems, and of civilizations: issues of geographic differentiation, inequality, and uneven change. Civilizations considered in their political aspect ordinarily have one or the other of two political structures: the ...

Core–Periphery Structure in Fiji

Environment and Planning D: Society and Space, 1988
The central theme of this paper is that a core – periphery structure which was established in Fiji in colonial times has been maintained in the current independent state. The basic structure has not changed and the nature of the relationships between the capitalist mode of production (as the main component of the core) and the village-based mode of ...

Power and Core-Periphery Networks

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2010
The heterogeneous connections model is a generalization of the homogeneous connections model of Jackson and Wolinsky (1996) in which the intrinsic value of each connection is set by a discrete, positive and symmetric function that depends solely on the types of the two end agents.

Biodiversity Along Core–Periphery Clines

2005
The study of biodiversity has received wide attention in recent decades. Biodiversity has been defined in various ways (Gaston and Spicer, 1998, Purvis and Hector 2000, and chapters in this volume). Discussion regarding its definitions is dynamic, with shifts between the more traditional emphasis on community structure to emphasis on the higher ...
