Impact of COVID-19 restrictions on the research environment and motivation of researchers in Japan
The environment surrounding researchers has changed significantly in the face of COVID-19 restrictions. An online self-reported questionnaire was completed by 10,557 participants between June 15 and 19, 2020.

A new high-resolution geomagnetic field model for southern Africa
Earth’s magnetic field is a dynamic, changing phenomenon. The geomagnetic field consists of contributions from several sources, of which the main field originating in Earth’s core makes up the bulk.

Ultrafast annular-magnetic-field-driven vortex-core reversals
By micromagnetic numerical simulations, we investigate the dynamics of vortex-core reversal in a soft magnetic nanodisk under the excitation of annular, perpendicular, resonant magnetic fields.

Transcriptomics as an Early Warning of Domoic Acid Exposure in Pacific Razor Clams (Siliqua patula)
As oceans warm, harmful algal blooms (HABs) are expected to increase, including blooms of Pseudo-nitzschia, a diatom that produces domoic acid (DA), which is a potent neurotoxin.

A Laboratory Model for Iron Snow in Planetary Cores
Solidification of the cores of small planets and moons is thought to occur in the “iron snow” regime, in which iron crystals form near the core‐mantle boundary and fall until re‐melting at greater depth. The resulting buoyancy flux may sustain convection

Magnetic Fields in Quasar Cores. II.
Multi-frequency polarimetry with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) telescope has revealed absolute Faraday Rotation Measures (RMs) in excess of 1000 rad/m/m in the central regions of 7 out of 8 strong quasars studied (e.g., 3C 273, 3C 279, 3C 395). Beyond a projected distance of ~20 pc, however, the jets are found to have |RM| < 100 rad/m/m.

Radiated fields by polygonal core-shell nanowires [PDF]
We calculate the electromagnetic field radiated by tubular nanowires with prismatic geometry and infinite length. The polygonal geometry has implications on the electronic localization; the lowest energy states are localized at the edges of the prism and are separated by a considerable energy gap from the states localized on the facets.

The intensity of the geomagnetic field from 2.4 Ga old Indian dykes
Precambrian paleomagnetic records from dyke swarms provide a unique source of information regarding the Archean geomagnetic field and more specifically the average field strength produced by the early dynamo.
