Coriolis force, geostrophic motion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This lesson will help students understand what the Coriolis force is, and what effects it has on objects in motion. Students will be able to describe and explain the Coriolis force, and compare and contrast conditions under which the Coriolis force has a

The Coriolis Force

2011
Abstract The objective of this chapter is to examine the Coriolis force, a fictitious force arising from the choice of a rotating framework of reference. Some physical considerations are offered to provide insight on this nonintuitive but essential element of geophysical flows.

Meteorology and Coriolis Forces

2004
Any teacher who stands up in front of a class and says that Coriolis force determines which way the water flows from a sink or bathtub, should not only read Fraser’s Bad Coriolis Web page (www.ems.psu.edu/fraser/Bad/BadCoriolis.html), but be required to copy it on the blackboard 100 times. The influence of coriolis force on MHD waves

Proceedings of the Indian Academy of Sciences - Section A, 1973
The influence of coriolis force on the propagation of MHD waves in compressible medium is investigated by using linear stability analysis. In a combined effect we find that, while compressibility gives rise to an acoustic wave, coriolis force results in a modified Alfven wave.

Effects of coriolis force and vegetation on jets

2022
In the ocean, the direct effect of rotation on turbulence induced by an obstructed pattern should be quite negligible, because of its small scale. Nevertheless, the mean flow is modified by rotation and consequently the transport and spreading of turbulent kinetic energy and tracers by the mean flow is modified in a rotating frame (Godeferd & Moisy,

Student Experiment on Coriolis Force

American Journal of Physics, 1966
A simple experiment is described in which measurements may be made of the trajectory of a of a particle moving under the influence of the Coriolis force; these measurements in turn provide experimental verification of certain elementary features of the motion.

Coriolis Force on Your Arms

The Physics Teacher, 2003
The Coriolis force is a sideward force that acts on a rotating object as it moves toward or away from the center of rotation. It is important to long-range artillery and the formation of tornados, but we seldom experience this force on a human scale, unless we play on a merry-go-round or similar apparatus.1 This note describes a simple activity that ...
