Observations on the labium of Corixidae (Hemiptera)

The structure of the dorsal wall of the labium in the corixid Cenocorixa bifida is described. This area has an extremely thin cuticle, bears numerous sense organs, and has an enlarged and elaborate epidermis beneath the cuticle. Johansen I am indebted for a small collection of Corixidae obtained by dissecting the stomach of a 28 centimeter male specimen of the Arctic Grayling (Thymallus signifer Richards.) captured in a small tributary near the mouth of the Churchill River, Manitoba. Three species are represented, one of which is described below.

Respiration of Corixidae (Hemiptera-Heteroptera)

PTERYGOTE insects originally evolved as terrestrial animals, but various families of Hemiptera have since colonized aquatic habitats. Corixids live on the bottom, feeding mainly on algae and detritus. Air carried on the hydrophobe body surface functions as a ‘physical gill’1–4. The thoracic tracheal system is well developed.

We here update the distribution and provide a checklist of the water boatmen (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Corixoidea: Corixidae) of Romania based on country-wide sampling, a literature survey, and private and museum collections. The Romanian fauna currently comprises 25 water boatmen species and subspecies in eight genera and two subfamilies.
