An outbreak of trichinosis involving at least 26 people in Cork in 1967 is described. One death possibly due to the disease is reported. It was not possible to trace the source back to any particular bacon factory. The vehicle was almost certainly sausages and /or a pork product consisting of sausage meat and scraps of raw pork.

The common cork stopper takes advantage of the peculiar properties of the bark of the cork oak. This has very low permeability to both gases and liquids due to suberin and waxes; the cellular structure makes possible the deformation that gives a secure fit in the bottle neck.
