Successful treatment of corneal hypertrophic scar in Hurler syndrome

open access: yesClinical Case Reports
Key Clinical Message In Hurler syndrome, corneal opacification is a common finding but rarely manifests as hypertrophic scars. A 6‐year‐old boy with Hurler syndrome had a hypertrophic scar on his left eye, which was successfully treated with superficial ...

A review of the role of ultrasound biomicroscopy in glaucoma associated with rare diseases of the anterior segment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Ultrasound biomicroscopy is a non-invasive imaging technique, which allows high-resolution evaluation of the anatomical features of the anterior segment of the eye regardless of optical media transparency.

Transparency, swelling and scarring in the corneal stroma [PDF]

open access: yesEye, 2003
This paper briefly reviews current explanations for corneal transparency and uses a well-developed model to try to explain the increased light scattering either accompanying corneal swelling or following phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK).The direct summation of fields (DSF) method was used to compute light transmission as a function of wavelength. The

Extracellular Vesicles in Autoimmune Diseases: From Diagnostic Biomarkers to Engineered Therapeutics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This review provides a systematic comparison of extracellular vesicles (EVs) from both mammalian and plant sources in the context of autoimmune diseases. It highlights their emerging roles as precision biomarkers and engineered therapeutic platforms.

Defect‐Rich 2D Layered Double Hydroxides Enhance Sonodynamic Antibacterial Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study develops defect‐rich ultrathin ZnCuW‐LDH nanosheets (DR‐ZnCuW‐LDH) via acid etching. DR‐ZnCuW‐LDH exhibits fourfold enhanced US‐triggered ROS production due to oxygen defects and electronic modulation, demonstrating potent antibacterial efficacy in vitro/vivo.

The anatomical knowledge of Namibian school children

open access: yesAnatomical Sciences Education, EarlyView.
Abstract The public has limited knowledge of key organs and anatomical structures. The lack of anatomical knowledge and understanding can hinder time to access healthcare, quality of care, and treatment outcomes. The current study investigated the anatomical knowledge among Namibian children by comparing 8 school grades—4 to 12, which covers children ...

Cytokines and Biologics in non-infectious autoimmune uveitis: Bench to Bedside

open access: yesIndian Journal of Ophthalmology, 2014
Intraocular inflammatory eye disease is one of the important causes of ocular morbidity. Even though the prevalence of uveitis is less common in relation to diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma or age related macular degeneration, the complexity and ...

Interleukin-1alpha production in human corneal scars.

open access: yesCollegium antropologicum, 2005
We studied IL-1alpha level in corneal scars with/without neo-vascularization. A total of 27 patients underwent grafting for corneal scar. Recipients were grouped according to number of vascularized quadrants (0 to IV/IV): none (n = 12), one (n = 5), two (n = 4) and four (n = 6).

Optimizing biophysical properties of cellular niches to enhance stem cell‐derived extracellular vesicle function in musculoskeletal regeneration

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from stem cells show promise for applications in regenerative medicine, but their scalability and yield remain challenges. This review explores the approaches for biophysical modulations within cell niches on EV properties, discusses the current clinical application of EVs, and provides an outlook on the existing ...

The Antifibrosis Effects of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor δ on Rat Corneal Wound Healing after Excimer Laser Keratectomy

open access: yesPPAR Research, 2014
Corneal stromal fibrosis characterized by myofibroblasts and abnormal extracellular matrix (ECM) is usually the result of inappropriate wound healing. The present study tested the hypothesis that the ligand activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated
