On corner frequencies, attenuation, and low‐frequency earthquakes

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2017
AbstractWe have recently suggested that the nearly constant duration of low‐frequency earthquakes (LFEs) (and, equivalently, the band limitation of tectonic tremor) manifests a moment‐duration scaling that is fundamentally different from regular earthquakes and is most easily explained as rupture on asperities of roughly constant dimension.

Stochastic Finite-Fault Modeling Based on a Dynamic Corner Frequency

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2005
In finite-fault modeling of earthquake ground motions, a large fault is divided into N subfaults, where each subfault is considered as a small point source. The ground motions contributed by each subfault can be calculated by the stochastic point-source method and then summed at the observation point, with a proper time delay, to obtain the ground ...

Single-frequency Nd:YAG ring lasers with corner cube prism

SPIE Proceedings, 2000
We put forward another form of the non-planar ring lasers, in which the corner cube prism is the key element and the Nd:YAG crystal is used as a Porro prism to enclose the ring resonator. The phase shift due to the total internal reflections of the three differently orientated reflection planes of the corner cube prism, Faraday rotation in the Nd:YAG ...

Scaling properties of corner frequencies of Kamchatka earthquakes

Doklady Earth Sciences, 2014
Scaling properties of earthquake populations bear the major information on the physics of the source process of an earthquake. To determine scaling properties, source spectra of more than 400 earthquakes of Kamchatka were determined in a frequency range 0.1–30 Hz using materials of digital registration of PET station, and characteristic frequencies of ...

Nonlinear frequency-magnitude relationships for the Hokkaido corner, Japan

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1990
Abstract Frequency-magnitude relationships are determined for a source region defined by a circular epicentral area of 50 km radius centered on the Carnegie broadband seismograph at KMU in the southeast corner of Hokkaido Island, Japan. Within this region, bounded by a maximum depth of 125 km, more than 11,100 earthquakes were detected ...

Corner frequency in induced cracks in laboratory samples

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2012
An experimental study of corner frequency in special samples prepared in laboratory it is presented. The samples were prepared to produce a controlled fault and the acoustic emissions in the failure time were recorded. Our finding shows that it is possible to detect signals from the sample fault.
