Zero-frequency corner modes in mechanical graphene
In an unconstrained elastic body, emergence of zero natural frequencies is an expectable outcome on account of the body's ability to purely translate or rotate with no structural deformation. Recent advances in literature have pushed such conventional definition and demonstrated properties transcending typical zero-frequency modes, such as localization

This study investigates laser metal deposition of aluminum alloys EN AW‐7075 and EN AW‐5083, using powder blending to compensate zinc and magnesium evaporation. In situ alloying and ex situ alloying with ZnAl12 and AZ91 preserve near‐standard compositions and improve mechanical properties.

IntroductionThe great sensitivity and frequency selectivity of mammalian hearing originates in cochlear mechanics. Cochlear responses to sound are thought to be amplified by outer hair cells (OHCs) cyclically expanding and contracting lengthwise in ...

‘Soft’ phonon modes, structured diffuse scattering and the crystal chemistry of Fe-bearing sphalerites [PDF]
Electron diffraction has been used to carefully investigate the reciprocal lattices of a range of iron-bearing sphalerites looking for evidence of Fe clustering and/or Fe/Zn ordering in the form of either additional satellite reflections or a structured ...

Additive manufacturing (AM) allows great geometric freedom for lightweight components. As parts are progressively optimized exploiting potentials in AM leading in smaller material cross sections, high pressure solution treating and aging (STA) treatments show an enormous potential for strongly improving material properties.

Analysis of strong-motion data of the 1990 Eastern Sicily earthquake
The strong motion accelerograms recorded during the 1990 Eastern Sicily earthquake have been analyzed to investigate source and attenuation parameters. Peak ground motions (peak acceleration, velocity and displacement) overestimate the values predicted ...

Design of waveguides, bends and splitters in photonic crystal slabs with hexagonal holes in a triangular lattice [PDF]
Waveguides in photonic crystal slabs (PCS) can be obtained by omitting a row of holes (W1-waveguides). In general the propagation properties in such waveguides suffer from the unavoidable periodic sidewall corrugation caused by the remaining parts of the
