Dispersers are more likely to follow mucus trails in the land snail Cornu aspersum [PDF]

open access: yesThe Science of Nature, 2018
AbstractDispersal, i.e. movement leading to gene flow, is a fundamental although costly life history trait. The use of indirect social information may help mitigate these costs, yet in many cases little is known about the proximate sources of such information, and how dispersers and residents may differ in their information use.

Snail eggs as a raw material for the production of a caviar substitute

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Research, 2020
Snail eggs can be the raw material for the production of a caviar substitute. The substitute varies from the original in caloric value and nutrient content which determine the nutritional value of every foodstuff. The present study aimed to determine and

An unexpected twist: Sperm cells coil to the right in land snails and to the left in song birds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In animals, cell polarity may initiate symmetry breaking very early in development, ultimately leading to whole-body asymmetry. Helical sperm cells, which occur in a variety of animal clades, are one class of cells that show clearly visible bilateral

Effect of cadmium on cytosine hydroxymethylation in gastropod hepatopancreas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
5-Hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) is an important, yet poorly understood epigenetic DNA modification, especially in invertebrates. Aberrant genome-wide 5hmC levels have been associated with cadmium (Cd) exposure in humans, but such information is lacking ...

Safety of HelixComplex snail mucus (HSM) as a novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 22, Issue 1, January 2024.
Abstract Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on HelixComplex Snail Mucus (HSM) as a novel food (NF) pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. The NF consists of snail mucus collected from Helix aspersa maxima and is proposed to be used by adults

Gastropod-Borne Helminths: A Look at the Snail-Parasite Interplay. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
More than 300 million people suffer from a range of diseases caused by gastropod-borne helminths, predominantly flatworms and roundworms, whose life cycles are characterized by a diversified ecology and epidemiology. Despite the plethora of data on these

Uptake and biological responses in land snail Cornu aspersum exposed to vaporized CdCl2

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2018
The uptake of Cd and some biomarkers of exposure and effects have been investigated in specimens of land snail Cornu aspersum exposed to vaporized CdCl2 (10mg/L) for 7 days. The Cd levels quantified in snail's whole bodies confirmed Cd bioavailability trough vaporization and an higher accumulation in the midgut gland compared to the foot.
