Cornu aspersum

open access: yes, 2015
Cornu aspersum (Müller, 1774) Description Paul (1982), Barker (1999). Distribution Native to Western Europe and Mediterranean region, now cosmopolitan (Cowie 2000). This is the NIS with the oldest occurrence records in Chile (Philippi 1885) and the introduced species with the largest distribution in the country, found in this work (Tables 1, 2) from ...

Refining the biogeographical scenario of the land snail Cornu aspersum aspersum: Natural spatial expansion and human-mediated dispersal in the Mediterranean basin [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2018
The land snail Cornu aspersum aspersum, native to the Mediterranean region, has been the subject of several anatomical and molecular studies leading to recognize two divergent lineages, named "East" and "West" according to their geographical distribution in North Africa.

Exploring Ant‐Mollusk Interactions: Insights From Southern Spain

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 5, May 2025.
This study reports new data about ant‐mollusk interactions from accidental field observations, a quantitative analysis of the snail shells found in 16 Messor ant nest cleanings, and a qualitative analysis of 51 additional nests of different species. ABSTRACT Ants occupy a great variety of habitats, perform essential ecological roles, and interact with ...

The effects of loose, firm, fine, and coarse substrates on the movement of the red flour beetle

open access: yesInsect Science, Volume 32, Issue 2, Page 662-674, April 2025.
The study focused on the impact of substrate roughness on movement properties, utilizing the red flour beetle as a model organism. Findings revealed significant variations in movement behavior between rough and smooth substrates, with beetles traveling longer distances on smooth surfaces compared to sandpaper and loose sand.

From Nature to Nurture: The Science and Applications of Snail Slime in Health and Beauty

open access: yesJournal of Cosmetic Dermatology, Volume 24, Issue 2, February 2025.
ABSTRACT Background Snail slime (SS), a complex biological substance produced by various snail species, has garnered significant attention in recent years due to its diverse applications in health, cosmetics, and biotechnology. Aims Our previous review focused on the biological activities of SS, while the current one explores the science behind SS with

Population monitoring and conservation implications of intra‐ and interspecific nest occupation rates in swallows

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 10, October 2024.
The long‐term monitoring of nests may constitute a reliable and affordable method, with the help of citizen science, for assessing changes in breeding population sizes and conservation threats of mud‐nest building hirundines worldwide. Breeding adults, and completely built and destroyed nests of red‐rumped swallows Cecropis daurica (a1–a5), barn ...

Biological Flora of Britain and Ireland: Silene uniflora‡

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 112, Issue 9, Page 2135-2157, September 2024.
Sea Campion (Silene uniflora) flowers throughout the summer on cliffs, dunes and shingle, mainly around the Atlantic and Baltic coasts of Europe. Plants may have hermaphrodite flowers, female‐only flowers or both. Long‐tongued Hymenoptera and night‐flying moths are important pollinators, and they commonly also transmit a castrating fungal disease ...

Uptake and biological responses in land snail Cornu aspersum exposed to vaporized CdCl2

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2018
The uptake of Cd and some biomarkers of exposure and effects have been investigated in specimens of land snail Cornu aspersum exposed to vaporized CdCl2 (10mg/L) for 7 days. The Cd levels quantified in snail's whole bodies confirmed Cd bioavailability trough vaporization and an higher accumulation in the midgut gland compared to the foot.

Diagnosis and management of Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii detected in an oral mass in a pink‐tongued skink (Cyclodomorphus gerarrdii)

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, Volume 102, Issue 8, Page 416-422, August 2024.
Cryptococcus is an encapsulated yeast that is found in both yeast and hyphal forms. Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gattii are the most medically important species, causing disease in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals. A large, friable, sublingual mass was surgically resected from the oral cavity of a pink‐tongued skink ...
