Spectral Characteristics and Evolution Mechanism of Silicon Rubber Surface Discharge Under Thermal Ageing Condition

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Surface discharge is a typical fault type in electric power equipment. High temperature in long‐term operation can easily lead to ageing of materials, resulting in changes in surface characteristics and surface discharge faults. In this paper, a method of surface discharge identification of silicon rubber (SiR) based on spectral detection ...

Investigating Spatial‐Temporal Optical Emission Spectroscopy of Unstable Positive Leaders in Long Sparks Under Atmospheric Pressure

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study explores exciting state species and reaction pathways in positive leaders to better understand the breakdown mechanisms of long air gap discharges and natural lightning. Emission spectra from an unstable positive leader in a 1 m rod‐plate air gap under switching impulse voltages were observed, spanning 300–800 nm.

Integrated Learning‐Based Ageing Assessment of Silicone Rubber

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The surface ageing of silicone rubber composite insulators, widely used in power systems, poses significant challenges. This study integrates Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy with machine learning to evaluate ageing states and explore underlying mechanisms under various environmental conditions.

Study on the Impact of Contamination Containing High Proportions of Metals on the AC Flashover Characteristics of Insulators

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In heavy metal industrial areas, the issue of insulation flashover caused by metal contamination on the external insulation of transmission lines has become increasingly prominent. This paper investigates the U160B/155 porcelain insulator, examining how iron, copper and zinc metal contaminations affect its AC flashover characteristics ...

Corona discharge photography

Journal of Applied Physics, 1973
Using short (∼ 100 μsec) pulses of rf (1 MHZ) applied to parallel electrodes in air at small electrode spacings (∼ 250 μ) and at an applied field of ∼ 106 V/cm, discharges from both biological and metallic electrodes occurred from a network of points in the electrode surface. These discharges were recorded photographically.
