Dipyridamole for coronary artery bypass surgery

A randomized trial to compare the effects of oral and intravenous dipyridamole was conducted in 58 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Preoperative oral administration of dipyridamole resulted in lower plasma drug concentrations in the early postoperative period than perioperative intravenous administration.

Patients with single-vessel disease, with normal or mildly abnormal ventricular function (EF greater than 40%), have a good prognosis both for natural survival and long-range symptomatic improvement; therefore medical therapy is strongly recommended. Surgery is considered only if symptoms persist after aggressive medical therapy.
