Corrosion Mechanism and Corrosion Factors

2009
First of all, we have to define the term “corrosion” in an interesting way. When you observe the rust spots on a car, the question is why was the rust formed? It was formed because of the reaction between iron and the environment. This may be the atmosphere, water, soil, chemicals, etc. We call rust a “corrosion product” formed on iron surfaces.

Mechanisms of uniform corrosion under corrosion deposits

Journal of Materials Science, 1993
The liquid-phase transport phenomena which occur at the surface of iron-base alloys during corrosion have been analysed. These mechanisms determine either the maintenance of bare metal or the precipitation of solid corrosion products, the build-up of a corrosion deposit and the control of its thickness, and finally, the kinetics of the electrochemical ...

Mechanically Assisted Corrosion

2009
In the previous chapter we discussed two forms of localized corrosion – crevice corrosion and pitting. This chapter considers five more forms of localized corrosion, and these have the added common feature that they are assisted by mechanical processes.

Anaerobic Corrosion Mechanisms

CORROSION 1983, 1983
Abstract A discussion of the mechanisms which have been proposed to account for the anaerobic corrosion of iron by the action of sulfate-reducing bacteria primarily within the genus Desulfovibrio. Proposed mechanisms have ranged from the postulated: (a) direct bacterial removal of hydrogen (electrons) from the surface of iron; (b ...

Mechanical Properties and Corrosion

1992
The influence of the environment is one of the reasons preventing a successful application of nonoxide ceramics in different high-temperature devices. Nevertheless mechanical tests on them are often performed only in inert media. According to the present knowledge [6.1, 2] the strength of ceramics on heating should slightly change first within the ...

Macrocell Corrosion Mechanism

2018
When a macrocell is formed in a corrosion process, an electrical field is established in the environment because a net current flows from the anode to the cathode, which are physically separated. This situation occurs in galvanic corrosion, differential aeration, localized attacks such as pitting and crevice, and cathodic protection.

Corrosive-Mechanical Interactions

1993
A synergistic interaction exists between corrosion and stress. The stresses may be applied directly through the metal as tension, torsion, or compression, or they may be applied to the metal surface through the environment, such as occurs with high-velocity liquids and impingement by suspended solids.

Corrosion and mechanical properties

Orthopaedics and Trauma, 2016
This paper is intended to give a brief introduction to the corrosion and mechanical properties of materials used in orthopaedic and trauma applications. The human body is a harsh and hostile environment. As scientists and clinicians we expect to place a material within the biological environment, subject it to a complex mix of mechanical and chemical ...

Mechanisms of Hot Corrosion

1982
This paper reviews the results of hot corrosion mechanisms research carried out in Round 2 of COST 50 and sets it in relation to contemporary research outside COST 50.
