All‐Aqueous Pullulan Fibers Enabling Visible‐to‐Near‐Infrared Waveguiding with Mechanical and Thermal Resilience

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Pullulan, a biomass‐derived polysaccharide, is transformed into transparent optical fibers using a solvent‐free borax hydrogel‐spinning method. The fibers outperform PMMA with ≈200 MPa tensile strength and 200 °C stability, while uniquely guiding visible‐to‐NIR light and enabling additive‐free humidity sensing.

Effects of Nanosized Nb Carbide Precipitates on the Corrosion Behavior of High-Strength Low-Alloy Steel in Simulated Seawater

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrochemical Science, 2017
Nb is usually utilized in high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels as a strengthening and toughening microalloying element. HSLA steels with different Nb contents, or different amounts of precipitates were chosen to study the effects of Nb and Nb carbide ...

Structural Porosity and Low Mineral Density in Enamel Rods Drive Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study uses advanced imaging modalities on multiple length scales to show that molar‐incisor hypomineralization does not present as a locally homogeneous pathology. Instead, microstructural defects, characterized through non‐mineralized, protein‐rich sheaths and an altered mineral structure in between prism rods, resulting in local differences in ...

Long-term degradation performance and biocompatibility of plasma electrolytic oxidation coated Mg-0.45Ca-xZn alloys prepared using a fluoride-based electrolyte

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
In this work, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) with a fluoride-based electrolyte was performed on Mg-0.45Ca-xZn (x = 0, 0.45, 1.0, 2.0 wt%) alloys to enhance their degradation properties.

Modulating Interfacial Potential Gradients in Metal−Carbon Catalysts via Phase‐Engineering for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
It is elucidated that phase engineering of cobalt modulates the interfacial potential gradients of cobalt–carbon electrocatalysts, enhancing the intrinsic electrocatalytic performance. Modulating the dominant crystalline phase of cobalt from a hexagonal close‐packed to a face‐centered cubic enriches the electron density of carbon shells, thereby ...

Evaluation of Service Life of Polystyrene in Tropical Marine Environment by Principal Component Analysis

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, 2015
To predict the service life of polystyrene (PS) under an aggressive environment, the nondimensional expression Z was established from a data set of multiple properties of PS by principal component analysis (PCA).
