Evaluation of wildland fire smoke plume dynamics and aerosol load using UV scanning lidar and fire–atmosphere modelling during the Mediterranean Letia 2010 experiment [PDF]
Vegetation fires emit large amount of gases and aerosols which are detrimental to human health. Smoke exposure near and downwind of fires depends on the fire propagation, the atmospheric circulations and the burnt vegetation.

Aromatic plants, nest bacterial diversity, and nestling condition in Corsican blue tits
According to the ‘nest protection hypothesis', some passerines incorporate fresh aromatic plants into their nests which reduce pathogens that can negatively affect nestlings. We experimentally evaluated the effect of five aromatic plant species on the nest bacterial microbiota of Corsican blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus.

Status and future of seed conservation of threatened plants in the post‐2020 era
Ambitious targets have been set to backup seeds of threatened plants by the global strategy for plant conservation (GSPC), but it is unclear in how far these targets have been met and how seed collection should be organized to meet future challenges. Here, we provide an overview of the status of 44 countries in achieving seed conservation targets.

A synthetic eco‐evolutionary proposal for the conservation of wild relatives of the olive tree
Societal Impact Statement Crop wild relatives (CWR) are valuable sources of genetic diversity for plant breeding. However, the identification of wild untapped genetic resources (i.e., unexploited in crops) is not always straightforward. We propose a methodology to guide the identification and conservation of these resources that integrates both genetic

Hunting and fishing harvest data collection: a horizon scanning exercise from the French context
Legal and societal moves increasingly lead leisure hunting and fishing practitioners to record their harvest. The total number of individuals harvested per population per year is the minimum required information to feed into demographic models and allow science‐based management. Some few schemes record more detailed data, hence allowing better‐informed

Phenology of migrating game birds in Italy based on citizen science data
Studying the timing of the seasonal movements of migratory birds, known as migration phenology, is crucial for managing and conserving migratory bird populations. This is particularly important for migratory game bird populations in Europe because, according to the EU, migratory birds should not be hunted during their breeding season or during return ...
