Cortical visual impairment in children

Current Opinion in Ophthalmology, 2006
Cortical visual impairment is rapidly becoming a leading cause of visual loss in children in developed countries predominately because of the improved survival rates of premature infants over the past decade. Most cases of cortical visual impairment arise from hypoxic ischemic injury to watershed areas of the brain.

PHOTOPHOBIA AND CORTICAL VISUAL IMPAIRMENT

Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, 1993
SUMMARYPhotophobia, or intolerance of light, is not completely understood as a symptom. It has beenc divided into ocular and central types. This study shows that persistent, usually mild, photophobia occurs in about one‐third of children with cortical visual impairment (CVI). When the CVI is congenital the photophobia is present from birth, and when it

Cortical visual impairment following birth asphyxia

Pediatric Neurology, 1986
Visual defects are often poorly recognized in children with multiple neurologic problems due to perinatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. We report the clinical, radiologic, and electrodiagnostic characteristics of 20 children with cortical visual impairment secondary to birth asphyxia. Clinical diagnosis often was delayed.

Cortical Visual Impairment in Hypomelanosis of Ito

Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus, 2008
Hypomelanosis of Ito is a multisystem disorder that is thought to be due to chromosomal mosaicism. The authors report a case of cortical visual impairment in an infant diagnosed as having hypomelanosis of Ito. Cortical dysplasia was evident on magnetic resonance imaging and its presence in key areas of the visual pathway may explain the ...

Cortical Visual Impairment

2003
Cortical visual impairment (CVI)is the most common cause of bilateral visual impairment in children in the developed world. In less-affluent countries, the incidence is increasing because the survival rate of premature babies is improving. As a consequence, the mortality of children with complex medical problems has begun to decline.
