Chronic stress produces deficits in cognition accompanied by alterations in neural chemistry and morphology. For example, both stress and chronic administration of corticosterone produce dendritic atrophy in hippocampal neurons (Woolley C, Gould E ...

Radioimmunoassay of Plasma Corticosterone
Analytical Letters, 1974Abstract This report describes a radioimmunoassay method for the measurement of unconjugated corticosterone (B) in plasma. Utilizing an anti-Cortisol antiserum cross reacting with B combined with a one step celite microcolumn chromatographic system, we have measured this latter steroid accurately in small aliquots of plasma from both male and female ...

Synthesis of corticosterone in the vascular wall.
Endocrinology, 1994Extra-adrenal steroid 21-hydroxylation and 11 beta-hydroxylation occur in a variety of human tissues. This study was undertaken to determine whether the rat mesenteric artery produces corticosterone and to demonstrate the CYP11B1 mRNA in the vascular tissue. Isolated rat mesenteric arteries were perfused with Krebs-Ringer solution for 4 h.

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Molecular & Integrative Physiology, 2003
Relationships between hormones and behaviour can be explored by altering endogenous hormone levels, often through implantation of silastic tubing or osmotic pumps filled with a hormone or its agonists or antagonists. However, organisms in sensitive life-history stages (such as pregnancy) may be adversely affected by the surgical procedures associated ...

The question of whether changes in glucocorticoid concentrations reflect consistent changes in physiology associated with transitions between different stages of reproduction, or whether they reflect responses to environmental conditions, is one the central issues in field endocrinology studies.

Modulation of the locomotor response to amphetamine by corticosterone
Neuroscience, 1993In the present experiments, we investigated the influence of chronic modifications of circulating levels of corticosterone on the locomotor response to amphetamine. Different groups of rats were adrenalectomized and implanted subcutaneously with pellets releasing different amounts of corticosterone (0-200 mg).

A radioimmunological method was developed for determining total and free corticosterone in rat plasma. This method was used to determine the dose-response curve of corticosterone and to measure the elimination and study the half-lives of total and free corticosterone in rat plasma with a dose of 5 mg/kg.

Abstract The effects of various factors were studied in relation to the in vitro corticosterone metabolism and corticosterone binding by beef adrenocortical cytochrome P-450 preparations. Temperature increments (0–37°C) enhanced the transformation of corticosterone to aldosterone and the binding of corticosterone to cytochrome P-450.

Effect of diazepam on plasma corticosterone levels
Psychopharmacology, 1984In light of the numerous but rather conflicting reports on the action of benzodiazepines upon the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-adrenal (HHA) axis activity, the effect of different doses of diazepam (0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 mg/kg) administered 15, 30, 60, 120 and 240 min before decapitation on plasma corticosterone level was studied in rats.

Mediation of a corticosterone-induced reproductive conflict
Hormones and Behavior, 2004Current research in birds suggests that a conflict should exist during reproduction for the role of the glucocorticoid corticosterone (CORT). While elevated levels have been correlated with the increased energetic demand of raising offspring, elevated CORT levels have traditionally been implicated in reproductive abandonment.
