Decline of Common Toad Populations in Flanders Is Not Linked to Surrounding Landscape

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
Analysis of long time series show a main decline in population abundances of Common Toads (Bufo bufo) in Flanders. This decline could not be linked to surrounding landscape variables, likely because of the regions fragmented nature and the species' generalist ecology.

Two Problems for the Political Inclusion of Animals

open access: yesJournal of Applied Philosophy, Volume 43, Issue 2, Page 526-548, May 2026.
ABSTRACT In recent years, the field of animal ethics has taken a political turn, with scholars arguing that sentient nonhuman animals should be included in the political sphere. This article explores two key challenges arising from this turn towards the political inclusion of animals: the Conflict Problem and the Numbers Problem.

Integumentary fibrosarcoma in a free‐living swan (Cygnus olor): Medical and welfare considerations

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 2, May 2026.
Abstract A 10‐kg adult male mute swan (Cygnus olor) of unknown age was admitted for investigations of two large ventral masses overlying the keel bone, which were discharging purulent material. The masses measured 8.9 × 2.1 cm and 4.2 × 3.2 cm. Empirical treatment with non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs and antimicrobials was instigated.

Both forest cover and land management practices explain variation in recovering pine marten densities

open access: yesWildlife Biology, Volume 2026, Issue 3, May 2026.
Robust monitoring of wildlife populations to guide interventions is fundamental to conservation and wildlife management. Understanding how landscape characteristics are influencing predator population dynamics is often vital to inform recovery strategies, management, and policy. The pine marten Martes martes is recovering in the UK; however, population

Managing nesting by Chihuahuan ravens on H‐frame electric transmission structures

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2012
Electric utility structures occur widely in natural and human‐dominated landscapes and are often used by birds for nesting. Nests can cause power outages, fires, and electrocution of birds and their young, particularly if nests occur directly above ...

Nest Predation in the Canarian Houbara Bustard (Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae): An Experimental Study Using Artificial Nests

open access: yesEcological Research, Volume 41, Issue 3, May 2026.
We investigated nest predation in the endangered Canarian houbara bustard using 229 artificial nests and camera traps. Ravens were identified as the main predators, and predation rates were influenced by raven density, vegetation cover, stone cover, and road density.

Desire-state attribution: Benefits of a novel paradigm using the food-sharing behavior of Eurasian jays (Garrulus glandarius)

open access: yesCommunicative & Integrative Biology, 2016
In recent years, we have investigated the possibility that Eurasian jay food sharing might rely on desire-state attribution. The female's desire for a particular type of food can be decreased by sating her on it (specific satiety) and the food sharing ...

Fit for purpose? Analysis of the relationship between skull, beak shape and feeding ecology in Psittaciformes

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 248, Issue 5, Page 873-887, May 2026.
Psittaciformes exhibit high levels of morphological diversity, particularly in skull and beak structure, previously linked to diet and body size. Although there were some levels of significance between diet and beak shape, body mass was a much stronger co‐variate. Diet is not determining beak shape within the clade.
