Air pollution and greenness independently and interactively influence bird communities in an urban neighborhood

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 7, Issue 10, October 2025.
In this study, we examined relationships between bird community metrics and environmental measures related to vegetation and air pollution within a residential neighborhood at multiple spatial scales. Greenness and air pollution measures independently and interactively influenced the bird community metrics we evaluated.

Pathological and Immunohistochemical Findings in American Crows (Corvus Brachyrhynchos) Naturally Infected with West Nile Virus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation, 2004
Twenty-one American crows were identified as being West Nile virus (WNV) infected by WNV-specific reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) performed on fresh brain tissue (cerebrum and cerebellum of 16 crows) or by WNV-specific immunohistochemistry of various organs (21 crows).

Nest clustering correlates with breeding phenology rather than female relatedness in Red‐breasted Mergansers (Mergus serrator)

open access: yesIbis, Volume 167, Issue 4, Page 1065-1072, October 2025.
Fine‐scale spatial and temporal genetic structuring of nests is possible in colonial birds that return to breed at their natal sites, and notably in waterfowl for which females are more philopatric than males. We genotyped female Red‐breasted Mergansers Mergus serrator breeding colonially on a coastal archipelago in eastern New Brunswick, Canada ...

Integrating Wind Speed Into Climate‐Based West Nile Virus Models: A Comparative Analysis in Two Distinct Regions

open access: yesGeoHealth, Volume 9, Issue 7, July 2025.
Abstract Since its introduction to North America in 1999, West Nile virus (WNV) has become the most widespread mosquito‐borne disease in the United States. Climatic conditions significantly influence transmission dynamics. While temperature, precipitation, and humidity are known to affect mosquito populations and virus replication, wind speed is often ...

Wildlife trade investigations benefit from multivariate stable isotope analyses

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 3, Page 1083-1104, June 2025.
ABSTRACT The investigation of wildlife trade and crime has benefitted from advances in technology and scientific development in a variety of fields. Stable isotope analysis (SIA) represents one rapidly developing approach that has considerable potential to contribute to wildlife trade investigation, especially in complementing other methods including ...
