Cultural transmission of vocalizations in ravens, Corvus corax
Animal Behaviour, 2002Abstract As ravens have pronounced learning capabilities, especially in the vocal domain, cultural transmission might be a relevant factor affecting the composition of their vocal repertoires. We investigated how important cultural transmission is in establishing a raven's vocal repertoire and whether there are different pathways of transmission.

Influence of competitors on caching behaviour in the common raven,Corvus corax
Animal Behaviour, 1998Both territorial breeding common ravens and nonbreeding vagrants scatter-hoard carcass meat extensively. We show experimentally with four captive nonbreeders in a large semi-natural enclosure that common ravens alter their caching behaviour in the presence of conspecifics.

Leading a conspecific away from food in ravens ( Corvus corax )?
Animal Cognition, 2004Active misleading of conspecifics has been described as a social strategy mainly for primates. Here we report a raven leading a competitor away from food in a social foraging task. Four individuals had to search and compete for hidden food at color-marked clusters of artificial food caches.

Verwandtenerkennung bei Kolkraben (Corvus corax)
2013Living in social groups holds many advantages but also disadvantages. To be able to cope with the complexities in such groups, it’s helpful to recognize individuals by their unique characteristics. The aim of this study was to investigate whether Common Ravens (Corvus corax) are able to differentiate between calls of unknown and known conspecifics ...

Scrounging Tactics in Free‐Ranging Ravens, Corvus corax
Ethology, 2002AbstractSocial foraging allows individuals to scrounge, i.e. to exploit the food others have made available. The conditions promoting scrounging as an alternative foraging tactic have yet received limited attention. We presently examine whether ravens, as opportunistic scavengers, adjust their foraging tactics according to the potential costs involved ...

Gaze following in common ravens, Corvus corax: ontogeny and habituation
Animal Behaviour, 2007Co-orientation with others by using their gaze direction is considered to be adaptive for detecting food or predators or monitoring social interactions. Like the great apes, common ravens are capable of following human experimenters' gaze direction not only into distant space but also behind visual barriers.

Complex social life requires monitoring of conspecifics. The amount and focus of attention toward others has been suggested to depend on the social relationships between individuals. Yet there are surprisingly few experiments that have tested these assumptions.
