Effects of Frictional Behavior and Geometry of Subduction Fault on Coseismic Seafloor Deformation

Abstract The seismogenic zone of subduction faults appears to have an updip limit, seaward of which the fault exhibits velocity-strengthening behavior. We use a two-dimensional finite element model including a frictional subduction fault to explore how coseismic strengthening of the updip segment affects seafloor deformation.

Coseismic strengthening of the shallow portion of the subduction fault and its effects on wedge taper

According to the dynamic Coulomb wedge model, coseismic strengthening of the shallowest part of the subduction interface can cause permanent deformation of the overlying outer wedge, so that the cumulative effects of great interplate earthquakes control the geometry of the wedge.

Coseismic effects of water temperature based on digital observation from Tayuan well, Beijing

On the basis of digital records from Tayuan well, we study coseismic effects of water temperature caused by remote earthquakes. The records show that the water temperature changes are consistently following the process of drop-rise-recovery regardless of focal mechanism or epicentral directions.
