The Possibility of Inferring Rupture Depths of Fault Earthquakes from Zero-strain Points of Coseismic Surface Deformation

Seismological Research Letters, 2011
Rupture dimensions of an earthquake fault are important parameters for characterizing the earthquake rupture and studying earthquake mechanics. They have been inferred from aftershock distribution (Alparone and Gambino 2003), seismic reflection and refraction imaging (Minshull and Hall 1997; Catchings et al.

Amounts and styles of coseismic deformation along the northern segment of surface rupture, of the 2008 Wenchuan Mw 7.9 earthquake, China

Tectonophysics, 2010
Abstract The May 12, 2008, Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake occurred along the Longmen Shan fault zone, a thrust fault zone on the eastern margin of Tibet Plateau, and ruptured the ground surface for more than 200 km. A field investigation suggests that the earthquake also ruptured the northern segment (from Beichuan to Qingchuan), along which active ...

Destruction on Buildings and Houses Related to Coseismic Surface Rupturing

2017
The Kumamoto earthquake series caused a maximum seismic intensity of 7 (on the Japanese 7-point seismic intensity scale) at both areas around the epicenters of the largest foreshock (Mw 6.1) and the Mw 7.1 main shock (Japan Meteorological Agency 2016), indicating severe damage and disruption throughout central Kyushu Island, including the Aso caldera ...

Coseismic surface ruptures of 20 strike-slip earthquakes measured from geodetic imaging data

Earthquake Spectra
Observations of coseismic surface ruptures are widely used for examining faulting mechanics and kinematics, and in fault displacement hazard analysis. Here, first, we provide new remote sensing observations of 20 historic surface rupturing continental strike-slip earthquakes (6.1 ≤ M w ≤ 7.9).

Complicated Source Rupture Process and Induced Coseismic Surface Deformation of the Wenchuan Mw 7.9 Earthquake and Their Tectonic Implications

2020
The source rupture processes and coseismic surface rupture of the Wenchuan earthquake are recognized as having the complicated patterns of a great earthquake. In this article, we review some of the Wenchuan earthquake source studies conducted by scientists from Taiwan and mainland China under the scientific cooperation of both sides of the Taiwan ...

Extensional reactivation of thrust faults accompanied by coseismic surface rupture, southwestern Wyoming and north-central Utah

Geological Society of America Bulletin, 1993
Extensional reactivation of thrust faults north of the Uinta Mountains in Utah and Wyoming is accompanied by Quaternary surface faulting, tilting, and monoclinal folding. The 40-km-long Bear River fault zone consists of down-to- the-west, right-stepping, en echelon scarps, each about 3.0 to 3.5 km in length, striking N20°W to N20°E.

The Paganica Fault and Surface Coseismic Ruptures Caused by the 6 April 2009 Earthquake (L'Aquila, Central Italy)

Seismological Research Letters, 2009
On 6 April 2009, at 01:32 GMT, an Mw 6.3 seismic event hit the central Apennines, severely damaging the town of L'Aquila and dozens of neighboring villages and resulting in approximately 300 casualties (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, http://www.ingv.it; MedNet, http://mednet.rm.ingv.it/procedure/events/QRCMT/090406_013322/qrcmt.html ...

Chapter 2 Geometry and Slip Distribution of Coseismic Surface Ruptures Produced by the 2001 Kunlun, Northern Tibet, Earthquake

2009
This chapter presents a case study of deformation structures of the coseismic surface ruptures produced by the 2001 Mw 7.8 Kunlun earthquake along the strike-slip Kunlun Fault in northern Tibet. Field investigations, seismic data, and interpretations of high-resolution remote sensing images reveal the geometric and deformational characteristics and ...
