Earthquake Source Characterization Using 3D Numerical Modeling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
To understand the physics of earthquakes, it is important to know what happens during individual events. Dissembling the information about the source process from the recorded seismograms is a difficult and non-unique process, as there are severe trade ...

Paleoearthquakes of the Düzce fault (North Anatolian Fault Zone): Insights for large surface faulting earthquake recurrence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Copyright 2008 by the American Geophysical Union. The 12 November 1999 Mw 7.1 earthquake ruptured the Düzce segment of the North Anatolian Fault Zone and produced a ∼40-km-long surface rupture.

Parameters of Coseismic Reverse‐ and Oblique‐Slip Surface Ruptures of the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, Eastern Tibetan Plateau [PDF]

open access: yesActa Geologica Sinica - English Edition, 2009
Abstract:On May 12th, 2008, the Mw7.9 Wenchuan earthquake ruptured the Beichuan, Pengguan and Xiaoyudong faults simultaneously along the middle segment of the Longmenshan thrust belt at the eastern margin of the Tibetan plateau. Field investigations constrain the surface rupture pattern, length and offsets related to the Wenchuan earthquake.

Discovery of the surface rupture zone along the southern branch of the Longshoushan Fault Zone, NW China and its significance to the deep structures of the 1954 Shandan MS 7¼ earthquake

open access: yesDizhi lixue xuebao, 2022
A detailed field-based remote sensing interpretation in this study revealed abundant recent seismic surface ruptures on the southern margin of the Longshoushan Fault, including fault scarps, mole tracks and displacements of river channels.

New findings on the effects of the İzmit Mw=7.4 and Düzce Mw=7.2 earthquakes [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, 2011
The 17 August 1999 İzmit Mw=7.4 and the 12 November 1999 Düzce Mw=7.2 earthquakes caused a 150 km long surface rupture in the western part of the North Anatolian Fault.

Bridge-Pier Caisson foundations subjected to normal and thrust faulting:physical experiments versus numerical analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Surface fault ruptures can inflict serious damage to engineering structures built on or near them. In the earthquakes of Kocaeli, Chi-chi, and Wenchuan a number of bridges were crossed by the emerging normal or thrust faults suffering various degrees of ...

Slip distribution of the February 6, 2023 Mw 7.8 and Mw 7.6, Kahramanmaraş, Turkey earthquake sequence in the East Anatolian Fault Zone

open access: yesSeismica, 2023
On February 6, 2023, two large earthquakes occurred near the Turkish town of Kahramanmaraş. The moment magnitude (Mw) 7.8 mainshock ruptured a 310 km-long segment of the left-lateral East Anatolian Fault, propagating through multiple releasing step ...

7.7, Baluchistan Rupture (Pakistan)

open access: yes, 2022
International audienceWe show the role of off-fault deformation in accommodating surface displacements across two kilometer-scale fault geometrical complexities.-Total coseismic surface displacement is constant along the study area, despite strong ...

Constraining coseismic off-fault deformation of the 2022 MW 6.6 Menyuan earthquake using man-made linear markers

open access: yesDizhi lixue xuebao
Objective  Accurate constraints on coseismic surface displacement are essential for revealing earthquake rupture processes, assessing regional seismic hazards, and understanding the partitioning of near-surface deformation.

Surface ruptures and building damage of the 2003 Bam, Iran earthquake mapped by satellite synthetic apeerture radar interferometric correlation [PDF]

open access: yes
We use the interferometric correlation from Envisat synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images to map the details of the surface ruptures related to the 26 December 2003 earthquake that devastated Bam, Iran.
