An MS 7.4 earthquake occurred in Maduo County, Guoluo Tibetan Prefecture, Qinghai Province at 02:04 on May 22, 2021(Beijing time), which is the largest one in China after the 2008 Wenchuan MS 8.0 earthquake. Finding out the distribution and characteristics of its coseismic surface rupture in time is of great significance for the identification of ...

Dynamics, radiation and overall energy budget of earthquake rupture with coseismic off‐fault damage
International audienceEarthquake ruptures dynamically activate coseismic off-fault damage around fault cores. Systematic field observation efforts have shown the distribution of off-fault damage around main faults, while numerical modeling using elastic ...

Abstract Landscapes in humid climates often experience rapid chemical and mechanical weathering that can change groundwater fluxes, drainage pathways, and frictional strength via alterations in subsurface mineral composition and matrix porosity. These changes to hillslope critical zone structure and strength should control landslide susceptibility ...

Present‐Day Kinematics of Continental Greece and Balkans Revealed by Sentinel‐1 InSAR Data
Abstract The Balkan Peninsula hosts the highest seismic activity in Europe, marked by numerous Mw6+ earthquakes in diverse tectonic settings. Assessing tectonic surface deformation is crucial to understand the forces controlling kinematics and, ultimately, constraining geodynamic models. However, because measuring slow velocity rates (a few mm/yr) with

Abstract We present heat flow estimates beneath the forearc slopes off Hyuga‐nada and Cape Muroto in the Nankai Trough, where the Philippine Sea plate subducts beneath the southwestern Japan. Using seismic reflection data, we identified Bottom Simulating Reflectors and derived heat flow ranging from 20 to >140 mW/m2.

The Spatiotemporal Evolution of Creep on the Southern San Andreas Fault Between 2015–2021
Abstract The Southern San Andreas fault (SSAF) in the Coachella Valley experiences shallow creep and slow slip events (SSE), which re‐distribute stresses in the seismogenic zone and affect the potential of future earthquakes. Although average creep rates are relatively well‐constrained, untangling the details of spatiotemporal variation in creep along ...

Tectonic Landform and Lithologic Age Impact Uncertainties in Fault Displacement Hazard Models
Tectonic landforms and surficial lithologic age are essential data for producing quality late Quaternary fault maps and predicting coseismic fault rupture location before an earthquake.
