Verification of Estimated Cosmic Neutron Intensities Using a Portable Neutron Monitoring System in Antarctica

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
Many ongoing studies for predicting the production rates of cosmogenic nuclides, forecasting changes of atmospheric compositions and climate, assessing the cosmic-radiation exposure of aircraft crew, and the effects on precise electronic devices use ...

Contribution of 4~400 MeV protons galactic cosmic rays to annihilation radiation in orbital gamma spectrum near lunar space

open access: yesHe jishu, 2023
BackgroundThe annihilation radiation exhibits conspicuous features in the low-energy segment of the orbital gamma spectrum, which contains a substantial amount of geological information about the lunar surface.

Characterization of Thermoluminescent Dosimeters for Neutron Dosimetry at High Altitudes

open access: yesSensors, 2022
Neutrons constitute a significant component of the secondary cosmic rays and are one of the most important contributors to natural cosmic ray radiation background dose. The study of the cosmic ray neutrons’ contribution to the dose equivalent received by

On parton distributions in a photon gas

open access: yes, 2009
In some cases it may be useful to know parton distributions in a photon gas. This may be relevant, e.g., for the analysis of interactions of high energy cosmic ray particles with the cosmic microwave background radiation.

Transforming DIY Geiger Counter Kits into Muon Detectors for Education and Scientific Exploration

open access: yesParticles
Any Geiger counter can be used as an effective cosmic ray detector on its own. In fact, it is known that even in the absence of a radioactive source, the instrument detects what is known as background radiation, which consists of various types of ...

Incidence of cancer among licenced commercial pilots flying North Atlantic routes

open access: yesEnvironmental Health, 2017
Background To evaluate cancer incidence among licenced commercial pilots in association with cosmic radiation. Methods Cohort study where ionizing radiation dose of cosmic radiation was estimated from airline data and software program and cancer ...

Comment on "On the Origin of the Highest Energy Cosmic Rays" [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
We show that the photodisintegration of heavy cosmic ray nuclei with energies above 10^20 eV is dominated by interactions with photons from the cosmic microwave background radiation, rather than from infrared ones.

Analytical Model for Estimating Terrestrial Cosmic Ray Fluxes Nearly Anytime and Anywhere in the World: Extension of PARMA/EXPACS.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
By extending our previously established model, here we present a new model called "PHITS-based Analytical Radiation Model in the Atmosphere (PARMA) version 3.0," which can instantaneously estimate terrestrial cosmic ray fluxes of neutrons, protons, ions ...

Metallofullerenol Sc3N@C80(OH)18: A New Generation Radioprotector Protecting Human Erythrocytes Against Multiple Biochemical Damage Modes Upon Gamma Irradiation, Identifying It as a Scavenger of Short‐ and Long‐Lived Radicals

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Metallofullerenol Sc3N@C80(OH)18 demonstrates strong radioprotective properties as a scavenger of both short‐ and long‐lived radicals. The study reveals protection of human erythrocytes from γ‐radiation–induced biochemical damage via post‐irradiation removal of primary and secondary reactive oxidants, supported by pulse radiolysis kinetics.

The Promise of Solid Lubricants for a Sustainable Future

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Lubricants are vital for technology, saving energy and resources. The industry seeks sustainable solutions beyond fossil fuels. Solid lubricants offer extremely low friction and reduce environmental impact, especially in harsh conditions. Can these solids truly replace liquid lubricants, or are they limited to extreme applications?
