Abstract This chapter argues, controversially, that all three of Kant’s announced criticisms are working parts of his critique of the cosmological argument. To see this point we need to appreciate that for Kant the assumption from which the argument begins is the fact that something existent is contingent—not in the sense that it might ...

Almost everyone who has reflected on theism is aware of the following argument: “The universe must have had a beginning, since an infinite series, or a set of infinite series, of causes and effects stretching back into the past ad infinitum is impossible”. I shall discuss that argument briefly at the end of this chapter.

I wish to defend a version of the Cosmological Argument. But the phrase ‘the Cosmological Argument’ has been used to refer to various arguments, some of them very different from each other. Let me, then, say at the outset that with some of these I am either out of sympathy, or I am just plain unsure.Take, for example, the argument for God’s existence ...

Abstract Dear Thomas, Of course. Why don’t we consider a cosmological argument? Roughly speaking, a cosmological argument moves from the existence of the cosmos or universe to the existence of God. But the cosmological argument comes in many forms, and I’d like to present a version that starts with the fact that there are many contingent

The book discusses the structure, content, and evaluation of cosmological arguments. The introductory chapter investigates features essential to cosmological arguments. Traditionally, cosmological arguments are distinguished by their appeal to change, causation, contingency or objective becoming in the world.
