Reassessing the Relationship Between Meteor Radio Afterglows and Optical Persistent Trains

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 130, Issue 9, September 2025.
Abstract Meteor radio afterglows (MRAs) and optical persistent trains (PTs) are two types of long‐lived phenomena which are occasionally observed following the occurrence of a meteor. Both phenomena are thought to be produced by intrinsic emission mechanisms; PTs have been associated with chemiluminescent reactions between meteoric metals and ...

Lobate Forms Around Craters on the Moon and Mercury: Origin From Landslides, Ejecta Flows and Modification Stage Collapse

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 130, Issue 9, September 2025.
Abstract Lobate forms emanate from impact craters and have morphologies indicating ground‐hugging emplacement via flow. We present global surveys of lobate forms on the Moon and Mercury. Very few examples have previously been reported on either body, with debate over their interpretation as either crater rim landslides or ejecta flows.

Enceladus Water Plume Modeling Using DSMC

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 130, Issue 9, September 2025.
Abstract This study investigates the water plumes of Saturn's moon, Enceladus, using Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) modeling to analyze venting dynamics and plume structures. Building on prior research, we employ a parametrized DSMC approach to model water vapor and ice particle flows, leveraging Cassini spacecraft data from instruments such as ...

Magnetic Mineralogy in Lunar Mare Basalts and Implications for Paleointensity Retrieval

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 130, Issue 9, September 2025.
Abstract Lunar paleomagnetic studies have identified multidomain metallic Fe–Ni alloys as the dominant magnetic contributors in mare basalts. Here, we explore the low‐temperature magnetic behavior of standard samples for a suite of opaque minerals that occur within mare basalts (single‐domain and multidomain Fe, wüstite, ulvöspinel, iron chromite ...

Investigation of the Thermal Conductivity of Dry and Icy Lunar Regolith Simulants

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 130, Issue 9, September 2025.
Abstract This study investigates the thermal conductivity of lunar regolith simulants, both with and without the addition of ice. A novel icy regolith simulant was developed, combining microgranular water ice particles and lunar highlands simulant LHS‐1.
