Besides the general theory of relativity, several other cosmological theories have been proposed. Some of them are fully formulated with specific predictions which can be checked, while others are simply vague ideas.

Summary: We review some recent work by \textit{T. Damour} and the author [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 920-923 (2000; Zbl 0978.83053)] on the chaotic behaviour of the gravitational field in the vicinity of a spacelike singularity in \(M\)-theory and superstring models. We stress in particular the rôle of the massless \(p\)-forms in this context.

Alternative cosmological theories
2019AbstractSince about 1970 the broadly accepted theory of the universe has been the standard hot big-bang model. However, there is and has always been alternative theories which challenge one or more features of the standard model or, more radically, question the scientific nature of cosmology. Is the universe governed by Einstein’s field equations?

Abstract Firstly, we look at some of the problems of the General Relativistic Hot Big Bang models and the solution of these problems offered by the inflationary scenario. Then, for historical reasons we give an account of the steady state theory. We look at some theories of gravity in which the gravitational ‘constant’ G varies with time,

Abstract The layout of the Stoic cosmos is similar to that of Plato and Aristotle. There is only one cosmos, and it is spherical, consisting of concentric layers of elemental ensembles, beginning with earth, then water and air, and finally fire.

Unifying quantum mechanics and general relativity—while simultaneously addressing the Hawking information paradox, the nature of dark energy, and the four fundamental forces—has remained an enduring challenge in theoretical physics. Most current models offer only partial solutions, rely on a multitude of free parameters, or fail to reconcile the deep ...

The Story of Cosmological Theory
Science, 1917Blank misgivings of a creature Moving about in worlds not realized. For him, perhaps it was enough to taste the joy of living, to watch the rising and the setting of the sun, to gaze upon the mountain, the river and the restless sea, and never to ask himself the question "what is this world in which I live, and how did it come into being?" But this ...

Abstract An understanding of Plato’s cosmology is essential to an appreciation of Plotinus’ contribution to the subject. The bulk of Plato’s natural philosophy is to be found in the Timaeus, which furnishes us with a structured basis from which we can survey Plato’s natural philosophy in its entirety, bringing in other dialogues as ...
