Recurring polynyas over the Cosmonaut Sea and the Maud Rise
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1987Two polynyas over the deep ocean were observed in the Antarctic region during the winter of 1980: one near 43°E, 66°S (Cosmonaut polynya) and another near 2°E, 64°S (Maud Rise polynya). The time history of these two polynyas was examined on an alternate day basis using ice concentration maps from the Nimbus 7 scanning multichannel microwave radiometer (

Multichannel seismic reflection data from the Cosmonaut Sea margin of East Antarctica have been interpreted in terms of depositional processes on the continental rise. A major sediment lens is present below the upper continental rise along the entire Cosmonaut Sea margin.

AbstractOpen ocean polynyas, regions of open water surrounded by sea ice, frequently occur in the West Cosmonaut Sea, an Antarctic marginal sea in the southern Indian Ocean sector. These polynyas play a crucial role in regional energy exchange and influence Antarctic atmospheric processes.

Abstract Diatom composition has been studied in two cores retrieved from the Cosmonaut Sea, East Antarctica, during the 36th Chinese Antarctic Research Expedition. The resulting diatom data are compared to other records from the Southern Ocean and the deglaciation history of the Antarctic ice sheet to reveal the climatic response of the ice-proximal ...

A polynya has been observed in satellite imagery to occur irregularly between the months of July and October in the Cosmonaut Sea. To investigate the processes of formation, maintenance, and decay of these polynyas, a 13‐year climatology of Antarctic atmospheric and surface conditions is assembled from numerical weather prediction model analyses and ...

Abstract Recent insights into isotopic exchange between nitrate and nitrite have introduced complexities to our understanding of the nitrogen cycle in the Southern Ocean. This study highlights unusual isotopic compositions in the mixed layer of the Cosmonaut Sea characterized by notably low δ ...
